hey guys! i know that it has been mentioned alot.. the wallpaper problem.. BUT. what i want to know is how come the pictures you take.. eg a 640 x 480 shot, never stretches if u put it as wall paper, there is always a white line on the top and bottom. i know the wallpaper sizes r 177x143 or something, but shouldn't the pics i have taken with the camera auto stretch to fit that size, since they are actually bigger than 177x143.. some one pls help! and if u know how to fix this problem, please tell me!

Hello 😊

First of all, the wallpaper *should* fit the screen! My boyfriend has a 6260 and on his, any taken picture IN VGA MODE, if set as wallpaper, fits exactly with no white space under or above it.

If you have a picture editing program, try the following: Create a new file, and make it size 640x480 (VGA). The resize it under "keep aspect ratio". You will see that if 640 becomes 176, 480 will become 144. Bingo. That is the correct wallpaper size for Symbian 7.0 devices, and the 6260 IS a Symbian 7.0 device.

So, your wallpapers have to be 176x144 to fit the screen exactly, and a VGA picture will do since the phone resizes it. Where do the white spaces come from?

Well, if you have an older firmware, and you use the "camcorder mode", your taken pictures are NOT VGA! Instead they are some smaller resolution (but i forgot exactly what resolution that was, but smaller than VGA!) And those pictures may eventually NOT fit the screen, since the phone resizes only one dimesnion and keeps the aspect ratio (otherwise the picture would look funny - stretched in one dimension). So the phone resizes *whatever* to 176 and if the other dimension is then smaller than 144 - you get white spaces.

Test it! Put the phone in "palm mode" (display facing upwards) and take a picture. In this mode (and ONLY in this mode, on older firmware versions!) the size is VGA as should be. That picture should fit your screen as a wallpaper without spaces.

If you want to edit pictures on the PC and use those as wallpaper, resize them to 176x144 to save memory capacity on the phone. Because the actual wallpaper is stored as a (rather large) .mbm file in the phone memory, regardless wether the origin picture is in phone or MMC. The bigger the origin file, the bigger this .mbm will become (in my phone, a 26 kb origin picture on MMC was transformed into a 78 kb .mbm in phone memory).

By the way if you want to forward these tips to friends, on a Symbian 6.x device (7650, 3650, N-Gage, N-Gage QD, Siemens SX1 etc) the wallpaper has to be 176x132! This will result in white spaces on top and bottom, but if you use 176x144 on those phones you will get white spaces all around! Keep that in mind.

Symbian 7.0 devices are: 6600, 6260, 7610, 6670 and the (coming) 3320. The 6630 is a Symbian 8.0 (don't know what size wallpapers, presume 176x144 too).

Kind regards.....
