All About ER6 is moving and becoming All About Symbian
If you are readinng this it means you are at the new site (probably using the temporary address till the domain name comes online in 12 hours or so).
Why move?
Well the last host couldn;t cope with the growing popularity of the site. Dextra who kindly gave his hosting to the site fre free for over a year got an e-mail from the old hosts saying the site was using too many resources (we were sharing a sever with maybe 150 other sites (I think!). In order to avoid getting the account terminated all about er6 has moved.
Please be patient
Inevitably its going to take a while for things to get completely up an running, but the forums seems good. I'll be adding the attachements feature back in again soon. If anyone has anything else they like to see now is as good a time as any to mention it.
I will be getting the main portion of the site up and running as soon as possible.
Why name change to allaboutsymbian.com
This had actually been planned for awhile. Aside from making the move easier (both new and old sites still work) with the release os ER7 I felt ER6 was getting to be a bit of a misnomer.... it should also make it clearer to people what the site is about.
Thanks for your patience,
Rafe
A big thank you to Rafe for keeping ER6 alive. I and many others (I'm sure) notice and appreciate the hard work that you do.
Thanks 😃
Well done Rafe, I suggest you do a Donation Section to prevent such things from happening again! Anyways this host is really fast! I remember that we had a similar dicussion some weeks ago about accessing the site! This is MUCH faster 😊
Anyways, I have experienced a problem where the web site does not automaticaly log me in and somethimes by browsing the temp site I get loged out and have to login again! Why is that happening? Have anyone else experienced this?
The only problem I find is that the server no longer updates which messages I've read. Other than that, all seems ok.
OK I see I see I am not the only one who experiences this problems! Might be the domain name though! Well see in a while I guess! 😊
I think the marking topic read and login problems are all related to the same issue (i.e. it cant mark topic read if it doesn't think you;re logged in).
Visiting the site via the domain and sthen temporary address or switching between the two will log you out. Because the login thing works with sessions it may also mean if you try to visit the site again (i.e. have two browser windows) it may log you out. Everything included logging in / out / topics read works for me so its not a problem with the server as such. I'm also getting topic notifications via e-mails.
Basically I'll get the rest of the site back up and if this is still a problem I'll investigate further.
Rafe
Firstly, A great thank you and much appreciation for a job well done 😊 [ TO RAFE ]
Secondly, since now is the time to demand 😉... I would like the following features.
Can admin/moderator collate posts so that the number of post is reduced ?
There are a LOT of duplicates posted so it becomes very confusing for people who come in new with almost 22+ pages ... so what happens is either they start a new thread or look for info in the first few pages...
I talked to Jizzo 😉 about this and he said all he can do is split posts not join them ...
Can people by notified of activity in selected topics ??? like a daily summary alone of activity ?? (I know currently there is a notify when reply is posted but can there be a summary ??).. Maybe even a customized view per user of favorite topics ???
also, is it possible for edits to modify timestamps ?? like when an initial post is edited for extra information it will be great if the timestamp can be edited instead of having to add a new post to the topic ...
These are just a few.. I am sure many will scream for more. .😊
Havent had any problems with logins, been browsing this site for about 4 hours straight now.
Something wrong with posting times?
it says last post 1:06 pm and my time is now 5:04 pm (timezone: GMT-2)
Yeah, thanks Rafe for great (and fast 😃 ) work !
Sorry to bother you again but I have noticed that I get loged out when I access All About Symbian Forum Index -> Nokia 7650 -> Bla Bla Bla (where Bla Bla Bla, any topic ). If I browse the categories nothing happens but when I actually want to read a topic then the replies are displayed and I get loged out! When I want to login I am redirected to the forum home page so I cannot reply with my username 😞 Strange! I havent changed my cookie settings at all and even tried to set it to LOW :-?
Great work Rafe!! Thanks for keeping this the forum going. Missed it real bad during the down time though 😞 ( Actually... this site has become more of a habit 😉 )
Thanks again for ur efforts 😊
I'm glad to hear it is still up,i was devostated when i got the strange error in german 😊
Darn, forgot to login, the german error was preety scary, nice work Refe
the german error was scary!!!
Thanks for keeping this alive !
I'm more than happy to share what i have... and to find out more info on the 7650
Sterling job Rafe. If you ever want to run a 'mirror' of the forums to keep people informed when the site has problems, just let me know, I'd be happy to donate some space and bandwidth.
People complaining about login problems:
Use the www.allaboutsymbian.com address.
even if you previously logged in automatically to the 'old site' you need to check the "Log in automatically" box thingy on the login screen.
Problem solved (for me at least).
Ps. Who are you hosting with now?

The hosting is with a firm called barefooting.com I got a recommendation for them, their servers were quick for me and offered a good price. They're also very quick on the set up / support front which was quite important in getting things going asap.
Rafe
Ahh........Home at last.
It's not been the same without you old girl 😉
Seems like the whole site is up and running again. 😃 oh joy!
Thanks again Rafe for quick work and staying up late to move 😊
Apologies for the error messages you've been getting. Tried to update attachements, but conversion from old failed I'm afraid. Probably have to start from fresh sorry guys.
Rafe
Could you clarify that up?
Does it mean that all attachments must be placed again or your
conversion have to start from fresh ?? :-?
Eiher way I can live with that, no problem. 😃
Just noticed that there is no link from forum back to homepage...
just a small irritation.
Yes that right. I think I'm going to have to start attachements from zero I can't convert the old ones.
I'll be adding a link to the home page tomorrow - but now I want to get some sleep. Have a 9:00 lecture tomorrow.
Rafe
You may have already seen the test post.
Yes attachements are back.
Unfortunately I wasn't able to convert the database of attachements (the script has been upgraded considerably). If anyone wants a specific attachement let me know and I can go and get it.
Rafe
Welcome back AllAboutER6 ,Ops AllAboutSymbian. 😃
The most informative website for Symbian User. 😃
Good to see that you got through it ... well done mate - I know how stressful these things can be.
As I said in a recent Personal Message, there might be problems in the email script generator ... it sent me an invalid URL.
Secondly, it might be a good idea to create another level of categorisation with discussion topics. At the moment all threads in 7650 are sorted by date. But really there is probably an argument for having a 'Support', 'Applications', 'Strategy', ... I am sure we can think of more appropriate headings, and then go and sew the individual threads back into each one of them. That way, the user has a slightly better chance of finding an existing thread that already discusses an issue they are exploring.
Just an idea ... but might not be doable as a result of the discussion forum software.
Another idea - you might want to explore a 'semantic web' or 'Ontology' oriented approach to organising the content, news and discussions. If you want to explore more on these ideas then you can give me a call (I think you have my email address or use MSN).
Xclnt work Rafe
Great Forums
Many Thankz
Yeah, I just got the confirmation ... there is an error in the email generator wrt to the URL (it doesn't come out as navigable URL either and I found I had to put a space after it to get Outlook to create the link)
I'm not getting the errors on the URL in the e-mails, but I'll look into this.
Yes the forums should be re-organised given how heavily the 7650 is used. I'm going to open this debate up at some point (probably in Community Waffle) to see what people think the best approach would be. Its certainly not a technical problem. Moving posts around is quick (I could to a whole page in a couple of minutes), and creating new forums is OK too. Just want to gaudr against having too many forums as that too may get confusing!

I know these guys well from http://www.sitepointforums.com/, they are technically skilled, knowledgeable and offer great support- good choice Rafe !!!
The search function has now been fully restored. It even works right back to when the forum was started which it didn't before, luxuriate in more than 15 months of posts 😊
This was the reason for the message about the board being closed which appeared for 25 mins, worth giving up restored search I feel!
I'll be adding a few more thing and getting all workign again, but this should be the last major disruption for the forseeable future.
