Go for 9300 or 9500

Hi,

I'm currently using SE P910 and I'm considering to get new phone which is communicator. I'm interested in both N9300 and N9500. Is the camera quality good? How about the wi-fi? What is the difference between the two aside from camera and wi-fi? Do both have the same processor speed? I heard 9500 is slow. Need your input/opnion.

Thanks,

I owned the 9300 briefly as a trial, then opted for the 9500.
The 9500 i feel, is the better machine, as the extra size does make for a less fiddly user experience. (The screen on the 9300 being the same res but smaller, is just to squintly & small, & the keyboard is also weeny!) The battery life is much better on the 9500, & of course the Wifi is Superb!!!

This may be subjective, but i also feel the 9500 is a tad faster than the 9300. Even though they use the same processor & memory, I'm sure there are differences in the driver chips etc.
The 'golf' game, event though it is jerky on both machines, which is a shame...(The graphics are hardly Playstation), the 9500 seems to play slight smoother.

Just a thought.

If the size doesn't bother you, go for the 9500 as it has the WiFi and camera. I agree the larger size probably makes the keyboard easier to use also.

But...

Make sure you get to hold a 9500 and 9300 in your hands first even if it's just dummy models in a phone shop. For me (and a friend of mine who used to have a P900), the extra size of the 9500 is just too big. The much smaller size of the 9300 is worth losing the wifi and having a bit of fiddlyness. I'm a happy 9300 user.

Most user reports and reviews conclude with the 9300 being a tad faster, but that's probably due to the 9300 having a newer firmware version than the 9500 they tested. They also conclude with the 9300 having a better build quality, that the 9300 is better for thumb-typing whilst the 9500 is better for non-thumb typing, and that the 9300 has a sharper display (smaller pixels). Most reviews I've read have given the 9300 a higher ranking.

Differences between the two:

  • 9500 has WLAN
  • 9500 has a camera (VGA)
  • 9500 has a higher capacity battery
  • 9300's screen can be tilted all the way back
  • 9300 is much smaller
  • 9300 uses a magnet to keep the lid closed
  • 9300 is more sturdy built (according to every review I've read)
  • 9300 looks better

Everything else is the same. Same software and same internal hardware components.

I had a hard time deciding between the two myself, but eventually it was simply the smaller size of the 9300 that won me over. And after more than three months of use, I am confident that I made the right decision. 😊

Why confused? I'll make it easy for you:

If you want a built-in camera or WLAN, and don't mind its size (or you have big hands/fingers), pick the 9500.

If you don't really need the camera or WLAN (they'd just be "nice to have" features for you), pick the 9300.

Hello, great forum and very helpful. I've been reading a lot about the Nokia 9300 and the 9500. One thing I came across but can't find again was that someone stated that the 9300 will tip over on a desk if opened at certain angles. Can anyone elaborate on that? Is it correct? I like to use the device in my hands while standing or on the move, but placing it on a flat surface for viewing and typing is also important to me. I'm leaning toward the 9300 rioght now, but really a tough time deciding. Thanks for the help.

Just tried it on my 9300 and found that it has to be tilted pretty far back before it tips over. It's so far back that you'll probably push it right back so it lies flat rather than use it at that angle.

All in all, I've not had any problems with it tipping when using it on a flat surface.

Excellent, Andy. Thanks. How long have you had your 9300? Have you seen and/or tried the 9500? I assume you're happy that you ended up with the 9300. I think that's what I'll be getting as well, now that you've answered this one concern for me.

Thanks again.

By the way, I need an app like PowerSafe or Code Vault, but would really like to have a desktop sister app to go along with it, similar to eWallet or Code Wallet on the Pocket PC platform. Is there such a thing for the 9300/9500? I've had no luck identifying anything. Anyone know if such a thing is available?

I've had my 9300 a month or so and am very happy with it. I took a look at the 9500 (i.e. went to a phone shop and tried it in my hand) - just way too big for me so I went for the 9300 and have no regrets about choosing it.

Can't really help with the codewallet question as I'm not familiar with that app but if it's an app' that you can password protect there are several options e.g. Fileguard. I've not tried it myself but it may serve your purpose.

I just bought 9500 this morning and still tweaking 😊 so far so good. By the way, what is the latest firmware version of 9500? Where Can I upgrade my firmware?

Thanks

Thanks again, Andy. Sorry, but forgot one related question about the physical stability of the 9300 sitting on a flat surface: I had also heard that it doesn't sit flat, meaning that if you touch one corner of the device, it can 'rock' on the feet, similar to the way a table would rock or tip if it had one uneven leg. Have you found that to be a problem? I heard the 9500 has less of a tendancy to do that???

- Jim

Just tried that and I guess there's a very, very slight wobble but I'd not noticed it before and you'd have to be very picky to find it a problem.

Your best bet is to try it yourself at a phone shop and see if it's stability and 'wobblyness' bothers you.

double_tap, what finally made you decide on the 9500? I'm sort of in the same place you were, but still leaning toward the 9300. Not sure if wi-fi and camera is enough for me to give in to the larger size.... Thanks!

Andy, thanks again. Yes, I'd really like to be able to do a side by side, in hand comparison, but I'm in the US, so it's not avaibale at any of the providers here just yet. I'll be using it on my existing T-Mobile USA account, at least until Cingular comes out with thier version. (just haven't got the patience to wait, and a sucker for new technology). Still think I'll get the 9300. Thanks for the advice.

Jim

WHy I decided on 9500

*Wi-Fi - So I won't get bored when I'm @ the airport or any hotspot. I heard majority you can access for free. 😊
*Camera - though not a big issue for me co'z I have d100.
*battery-stand by & talk time is longer that 9300. A big + for me (Travelling)
*Keyboard is bigger and with 9300 smaller keyboard I'm having a hardtime keyin.
*Price is not much big difference. About $100.

I like the look of 9300. smaller in size and specially the screen you can tilt over to 180 Deg.

I finally decided on the 9300 and it arrives today. I can't wait! I'll post my impressions after a day or two of use. From all I've read and learned about it, I think I'm going to be quite happy with it.

Thanks for the help and advice.
