Using 6630 for surfing with Ipaq @ 3G speeds

I just bought a new 6630 replacing my trusted 6600. I am using the phone as a modem to connect my Ipaq 4700 to internet. Does anybody know, how one can utilise the much higher surfing speeds offered by 3G technology? My epxerience up to now, did not show any subjective improvements Vs. normal GPRS.
Thanks in advance

The speed improvement is significant and observable (up to around 384Kbps or about 40-50KB/s). Even with EDGE (which the phone also supports), you get up to 120Kbps downstream speed, compared to about 40Kbps with "regular" GPRS.

So, first of all, does you operator support 3G (WCDMA/UMTS)? If not, then just having the phone won't help you at all.

Is 3G network coverage is available at the location where you try to use it (you see the little "3G" indicator on the standby screen)? If it is not available in the location where you are, having the phone and operator support is not enough.

Do you have a SIM card & subscription that allows you to use the 3G network? If not, having the phone & network & network coverage is not enough.

And, are you using a packet data connection (dialing *99# from your iPAQ, and not a dial-up modem pool)?

Thank you for your reply.

The answers to all questions but the last one is Yes. I was using however the *99***1# string to dial-up. Can you please clarify the following:
- Do I need to define an extra dial-string to the modem? (for the GPRS connection I had to put a string like: +CGDCONT=1,"IP","internet.vodafone.gr"😉.
- Also do I need to change the settings in the phone's packet data connection (currently: "when needed"😉 and access point (currently: none).
Thank you in advance
