2GB MMC Card For Nokia 9500?

10 replies · 6,753 views · Started 19 April 2005

Hi,

I'm wanting to purchase either a 1GB or preferably a 2GB memory card for my 9500.

Apparently not all MMC cards are compatible with the 9500. Which is the best website to purchase these cards from and where can I find out which ones will work with my phone?

Thanks
Ari

Hi!

I can tell you from my own experience that 1G Transcend MMC card works!

When I first inserted it to 9500, it took couple of minutes! to recognize the card (I almost took it out thinking it doesn't work)

I formatted it immediately, whic took about half an hour. Now I have about 500M worth MP3 files there that I listen every day with stereo handsfree HS-3, works fine! 😊

A word of warning: transferring files from computer to 9500 using USB-cable is _wery_ slow, about 20kilobytes/sec (it took almost one hour for 60Megabyte)

The IR-transfer is even slower, about 5kilobytes/sec, so you don't want to go that way.

Tried also a free java-fpt-server (by Andreas Garzotto) and with that the filetransfer starts fine (80 KB/s), but for some reason it suddenly slows down drastically, a bug? The YFTP might work, but it's commercial software and I haven't tried it.

Anyway I'm planning to buy a card reader, but I haven't found one that supports 1G MMC cards....yet. If planning to move lots of big files often the card reader is a must.

Hope this helps! 😊

Thanks for the advise. I'm thinking maybe to get a 2GB card but can't find any sites on the net that I cna buy from and they can ship to South Africa...

the search continues

I've used the following 1GB and 2GB cards in my 9300, so I can say for sure that these work well:

Kingmax 1GB Card - I got from newegg.com (not sure what the shipping policies are) http://www2.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820155265

MobyMemory 2GB Card - http://www.mobymemory.com/2Gb_MMC_Memory_Card_for_Mobile_phones.asp
(they shipped to the US, which is good because I could not locate another 2GB MMC)

The MobyMemory Card was ready to go when I got it, just had to copy my data and installed programs over to it and it just worked. The Kingmax 1GB card, I had to format it first (formated it in the device) but it was fine afterward.

I don't know if MobyMemory will ship to South Africa or not, but worth a check if you haven't already. They were reliable and fast. USA 9300 and 9500 users, don't be afraid to order from them, it took about 5 days, including the weekend, for mine to arrive. Now it's time to load up some MP3's and convert some MPEG's !!

Update to my last post....

I'm pretty sure the 2GB MMC I got from MobyMemory is giving me some trouble on my 9300. While I had the 1GB Kingmax Card in the device (quite a few apps installed on it along with data), for over a week I never had a problem. After putting the 2GB card in the device (same apps and data), the 9300 froze up on me twice the first day, and two more times in the last two days during extended use. The last time it locked up, it was actually in the cradle connected to my PC via USB and PC Suite 6.5.12, while running File Manager and deleting a little 525 byte file... it was taking forever, so finally I pulled the 9300 from the cradle and opened the cover... frozen solid... same symptom, the screen is on, but without the backlight, nothing to do but yank the battery.

Two days ago, I suspected it was the card causing my trouble, so I decided to format it in the device. Did that and restored my apps and data. Seemd OK for a while, but it's locked up twice since.

So, I've put the 1GB Kingmax back in the device and have used it quite a bit today, opening and saving a very large Word doc from the MMC and running PowerSafe with the data file on the MMC. So far, it seems like my first week of using the 9300... no problems.

I'll give it a few days before I declare 100% that the 2GB card was the issue and post my findings. Just wanted to give a heads up, in case anyone was looking into the 2GB card. Has anyone else seen this?

Oh, and it does look like the new PC Suite does, in fact, fix the Outlook Calendar bug. Nice!

I think it depends on the card itself. Some cards are just not compatible, or just don't work quite right with a specific product. I have a 1G TwinMOS card that's been working perfectly since day one. My 9500 firmware is 4.51 and 4.53 on my 9300.

I lost all my 5 Contact phone books at one time, but managed to recover them from backups.

I bought a 2GB MMC "A data" brand card from fastmemoryman on ebay and cannot say enough good things.

The 9500 firmware is 5.22 and likes the card very nicely. The only downside is that the phone will sometimes lock up if photos and videos are saved directly to MMC, so I save them internally then move them over.

Well I don't doubt that you have been lucky and had no problems, but I have to say that Nokia insist to me that nothing larger than 128Mb is supported, and my anecdotal experience is that with sheet files, especially, that it is totally unstable and unreliable.

I sent these posts claiming that 1 and 2Gb do work, to my contact at Nokia and have had no reply. Meanwhile my phone continues to crash, and corrupts Sheet and phone databases each time.
And Nokia, as I pointed out, insist that the controller does not support these large cards. My practical experience supports that. And by definition phone books change constantly and almost every day, and it is a real pain to keep losing my phone book let alone sheets.
For anyone using critical data on their 9500 I would say it is risky.

I would say that it is rather you that have been unlucky, Stubby. Nokia has clearly stated, officially, that the 9300/9500 supports up to 1G memory cards. I remember that from when it was first released. I think it was in the white paper. There are tons of people using Communicators with 512MB and 1GB MMC cards. 2G cards may cause problems though.

Like I mentioned earlier, MMC cards can differ in quality and compatibility. Some brands work fine with the 9500/9300, some might not work at all, while others work sporadically.

Well if that is the case then one part of Nokia (as is often the case) does not know what the other half is says or thinks. I paste below an extract from a Manager in Nokia which is clear.

I am a little concerned about the use of a 1GB memory card though as I understand the device supports up to 128Mb only.....

.....we would be more than happy to refund you the money you have paid for the product if you feel that it is not of merchantable quality.

And I have now found another significant bug in v4.51 which I am still using. If you change Home City in CLock from London to e.g. Madrid, it wipes out some but not all diary entries from Agenda. When you set the time back, mysteriously they reappear. Some entries are there, some are not, so a nice little bug which renders 9500 as a business tool pretty useless.

SO whether I shall take Nokia up on a full cash refund, I have not yet decided.

I have been working with a 2gb mmc card made by adata called the turbo mmcplus. It was reasonably priced at $120 US and it seems to be working fine. I have only been using it for a week so I am cautious. It came formatted as fat and ofcourse the storage isn't as efficent as it would be if the 9500 supported a better file system but it dramatically improves my storage compared to my 1gb card. I just search for 2gb cards via the main shopping search engines and bought it. The actual manufacturers web site is www.adata.com.tw so we know it is made in Taiwan, but ofcourse, so are most computer components now days.
