You're confusing GPS with GPRS if you try to compare it with EDGE.

GPS, Global Positioning System, is a satellite navigation technology. Originally developed for the US military, but then used for commercial marine navigation and nowadays for anyone who wants to buy a GPS receiver for navigating on water or land.

GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) is a cellular network based packet data communication mechanism.

EDGE (Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution) is a new radio/modulation technology based on GPRS that gives you somewhat faster speeds (about 120kbps max vs. about 44kbps with GPRS).

GSM (originally "Groupe Spciale Mobile" in French, but nowadays "Global System for Mobile communications" is the digital cellular radio techonlogy that GPRS and EDGE builds upon.

For data connectivity, at least with Nokia phones that have EDGE, there is no way to detect whether you are using EDGE or plain old GPRS (except by monitoring the speed of downloads).
