Problem: Nokia 6600 and international roaming

Hi

I have come across an interesting and rather annoying problem with my 6600.

When out of the country, using international roaming, there appears to be no option to 'Manually Select' the network you want to use.

When I go into tools> settings> network
the only option I get is cell info display on or off. It looks like there is supposed to be something else there, but there isn't

However, when I go into the help menu for this section it tells you how to supposedly use the non-exsistant manual network selection.

Both the downgrade (7650) and upgrade (7610) for this phone have the option to manually select the network when on roaming.

When I phoned orange (UK) thinking that the manual network selection was missing from my phone they informed me that the nokia 6600 does not support manual network selection on roaming, it just automatically selects the network when you switch on the phone.

Given that I go abroad quite a lot a its very irritating problem.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Is there a way of fixing it?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Cara

you mean you dont have this setting in your 6600? this is my 6600 screenshot. setting->network

Some operators want to buy devices where the network selection is locked (forced to "automatic" or fixed to a specific operator's network only). Nokia sells them such devices, if the order is big enough. Looks like this one could be one of those, so blame Orange.

My orange 6600 has the option for manual or automatic selection, in the same screen as 'cell info display' firmware 3.49.

Nope. its missing on mine. I'm not able to post a screen shot but I only have the cell info display on mine.

It just isn't there.

Does anyone know a way to fix it?

P.S. Not sure how to check what firmware my 6600 has- Could this be the problem?

It couls be orange's fault, but the 7650 I used to have and my sisters 7610 (both on orange) have the option there...

Cheers

Maybe it is a new orange thing, I have just upgraded to a 9500 from them and the option is there but greyed out so I cannot change it.

For Firmware *#0000#

Thanks for all your replies

I'm using firmware version 3.49.2

Hope this helps- I'll get on to orange again to see if they can give me any more info

I had the same problem. The only way to get around it is to hard reset your phone (see the "Codes" sticky, it's something to do with Green and * and 3), this way it will wipe the Orange-specific programming and give you the "proper" Nokia software back!

Er no it won't, it will put the phone back to how it was when bought, it doesn't reflash, it just gets rid of any user settings and puts the defaults ones back.
The phone was supplied with orange firmware, so it will stay with it until it is re-flashed in a service centre. If you reformat the phone it will delete any extra installed software on the phone like the orange supplied backup and updater programs (which when installed donot have and uninstall option) but the firmware will still remain 3.49.2 which is orange and have the orange message centre etc. installed as standard.

You have the same firmware as I do and yet I have the option. I mentioned my 9500 didn't have the option, but I have found out that it was because my sim card in it was not activated.
Has the sim card that you are using given that option in another phone? If so then it is a phone problem, if not has it been activated for roaming? Did it automatically select a network even though it wouldn't let you choose one manually? Was there a signal in the area to choose from?
There are many question which maybe able to narrow it down, sometimes you get the wrong person in customer services and they do not know about that particular bit so they can't really help.

The sim worked fine (and let me manually select the network) in my Partners 6310i.

The phone let me use international roaming and found full signal and let me make calls- but did not let me manually select the network I wanted- even though there were more networks available in the area.

The reason why I discovered this was that the T-mobile network in the czech republic would not allow me to retrieve my voicemail messages- I had to use my partners phone to manually select another network to pick them up using his handset.

Hope this helps- I'll try orange (yet again) tomorrow to see if they have a solution.

Thanks

Yes you are right but for some reason the first two Orange software versions of the 6600 has no Call Divirt Menu or Network Selection menu.

You have to do a *7760# reset or whatever the code is and it then activated the menus.

Thanks for all your help guys.

My phone does have all the call divert menu's- just not the network selection ones.

I'm really not keen to try anything as serious as reformatting the phone before I back it up- I am also really not technical with these things so I don't want to end up invalidating my insurance or messing up the phone so much it won't work

Thanks
