6630 0n Orange - no 2.5 GPRS

I have just acquired a Nokia 6630 on the Orange network - firmware 3.45.113. It works fine on the 3G network, which is borderline where I live, but when it shifts to, or is locked onto the 2.5 network, there is no GPRS connection; only voice and text. I can actually see the 2.5 transmitter from my bedroom window, so the problem is not a weak signal, and it occurs wherever the 3G signal is lacking, so it is not a transmitter problem either. Has anyone else experienced this?

I've just got a 6630 from Orange and found a similar thing. I manually switched the phone over to GSM only (to see if it affected battery life) and couldn't connect using the default Access point.

When I switched the access point from Orange GPRS to Orange Internet I could connect to email and internet over GPRS.

I'm not sure what the difference is between the 2 access points, and why one is 3G only or if the Orange Internet one comes out of the inclusive 1000Mb 3G trial.

Makes no sense for the one called GPRS to only work with 3G.

If I'm feeling brave I might ring Orange and enquire, but the chances of speaking to someone with half a clue about the technical features of their own network isn't that great 😊

One other thing, switching the default access point in the browser won't affect bookmarks that have already been saved as they remember which access point they were saved under. You can switch them all manually to follow the default though. Not sure why the default isn't to follow the default anyway. God I wish I was a Nokia beta tester.

Can't believe it's taken 3 years for them to produce a Symbian device where the menus cycle, and the IMAP client actually supports folders 🙄

Meanwhile, I seem to have solved my own problem. After another apparently unsuccessful attempt to connect to 2.5G GPRS this morning, I inadvertently left the phone trying to connect while I went to have breakfast. When I came back an hour later, the phone had connected, and now it seems to connect instantly every time, and on both Orange GPRS Wap and Orange Internet. I just don't know why 😮

Incidentally, when I phoned Orange 3G, they told me that the connection details sent in my Sim Update were actually wrong, and needed amendments 😡 The settings I have now certainly seem to work, although I have not tried MMS yet!
