ok - so i got smart movie from lonelycats... does nto matter if i convert a 512kb file or a 512mb file... they all have the same issue - the playback sucks. all of my playbacks on the handset are jerky frame by frame bits and look horrible. am i doing something wrong? definately not worth it if this is the way things were meant to be.
also, any alternatives out there? i want to convert mpg/avi/dvd for viewing on my x. thanks.

Try using nokia multimedia converter. I used it and i watched a whole episode of south park without any problems. That tool converts it and you can watch it with the real player built into the phone.
SmartMovie unfortunately is known to do this - you can get it to be "ok" with a bit of playing, but it's no where near as good as it should be. 😞
I found the quality of picture on smartmovie to be fine but the playback....well....
As with henny, I would stick with Nokia converter (you need to register for free on forum.nokia.com to get the unlock number. Don't worry, you won't get any spam). Maybe the firmware update will free up a little more RAM and playback can be improved with Smartmovie - we'll wait and see.
once again, i am glad to see i am not the lone ranger here. the nokia converter - ok foound it, will install when i get home.
any special settings i should use/look for? also, what format am i converting this to and what will i play it with.
on a related note - have a trial of the "dvd" player from viking. when i try to play any of the converted files with it i get an audio error or something. there is a message before that stating something about an app closing then it gets to the audio error in the main program. any thoughts on this.

the NMMC is pretty straightforward to use. It's not particularly good at fast action scenes - I use a Star Wars trailer as my test video and it plays smoothly but its a little chunky.
so i guess there is no way to get smooooooooth video on this phone? or is this the case with all handsets...

smart movie is working perfect with sx1, n6600,6680,6630.

i also used to have jerky play on the X, but now with my 6630, i have smooth videoplay on a fullscreen with high quality stereo sound. It's really an amazing difference!
Well hey there Speedster, still happy with your new 6630?? 😊 I'm happy with my X (ok, besides the crappy vidplayback...)
...kuch...1 Gb sd kaartje in mn X...kuch... 😃

and to think i thought this handset would replace my 6600 - boy was i wrong. and now i have TWO!!!
2 X's??? May I ask why you have 2 X's?
I have 2 Xs as well. Use them both a lot!
Hmmm....I think I'd rather have an X2 than 2X's. 🙄

Well I was hoping they'd manage to merge together to make an X2, but unfortunately they don't seem to fancy each other 😞
trimakassi wrote:2 X's??? May I ask why you have 2 X's?
one for me and one for the wife

i must admit that i am a vain person in that i like the looks of the unit, function comes it at an extremely close second. both my wife and i prefer the looks of the x to that of the x2, hence 2 x's instead of 2 x2's 😎
also, the x2 is not as readily available here in the states as is the X.
can any one give me freeware smart movie.......thnks in advance

That will be because it hasn't been launched yet!
Once it is, I'm sure it will be available in the States 😊
there is always one in the crowd - 😉 lol
Stu - seen Kev as of late?
Spoken to him, but haven't seen him.
He does still read these forums, but is a bit busy on X2, so doesn't post that much any more.
I've managed to get decent results with using DVD to nokia(from makayama software) for compressing and sizing DVD's and then using smartmovie to play the resulting .avi.
I've converted all my Family Guy episodes and the quality of picture and sound is good. There is some stuttering still (The title credits always stutter and when there is a lot of fast movement) but I think it is still quite watchable.
i think i have found the answer - for real player at least.
using the helios converter, i can rip all formats to 3gp and get very good results. i have to lower the frame rate to 12fps and tweak some other settings, but this is far and away better than what i can get anything to do with the smartmovie format.
...but you can't view that in fullscreen
yes, this is true. i was going for "watchability" over the ability to go full screen. i would gladly use smartmovie if i could figure out the exact encoding requirements for the avi. that is the one thing that i have not been able to do - eg. what size does the output file have to be and in what format (standard avi?). anyone? thanks.
