MIDI quality on 6630

Hi,
I've just recently upgraded to 6630 from 7650, and I must say that I'm quite happy with the switch. However, I found one drawback - the quality of MIDI music on 6630.

Files that sounded great on the 7650, almost like on a computer with wavetable MIDI soundcard, on the 6630 sound really pathetic, like on a cheap toy phone. What's up with that? I thought the technology was supposed to advance over these years.

And yes, I do understand that I could use MP3 instead, but I want to save card memory space. Besides, I've got some MIDIs that I used on the last phone as ringtones and would like to continue using them...

Does anyone know what is the reason the MIDI sound got worse?

It could be something to do with the firmware. My friend got one and the midi sounded like something on a 3510 compared to my 6600 which sounds very like my pc's reproduction of midi's which is quite good and my pc's nothing special.

The Midi Quality on the 6630 is much better than the predesessors such as the 6600.

Unlike your PC whic has the processing power to hold 1000s of instruments and play them back in perfect clarity or dedicated MIDI chip on some Sound Cards the 6630 emulates MIDI playback. It has a limited range of instruments so they wont always sound like they do on the PC.

No dount Nokia is also trying to move away from MIDI as most people are going for Real Tones nowadays and thats where the money is (in flogging them)

make sure you arnt changing the files when they are sent to the phone, send direct from pc to phone instead of through pc suite maybe?

Actually, I've even tried sending them through BT directly from 7650 to 6630. Still, the files sound like crap on the 6630. The 7650 wins hands down.

When the 7650 first came out, there was all this hype about the Beatnik Audio Engine it ran on. AFAIR this chip had hardware support for playback of MIDI as well as WAV and AMR files. I guess that it's missing from the 6630 for some reason. Having the possibility to directly compare the MIDI sound between the two phones, I can only say that it was A STUPID MOVE, NOKIA!

Coud be. That, and cutting down production costs. It's sad, actually. Turns out that all the newer and better products are not actually better, just different.

When the 7650 came out though Adams Family and Great Escape poly tones where the in thing.

A Beatnick Midi chip is prob not up to the task of playing Sweety the Chick and wouldent surprise me if they just opted for a Software Solution.
