OK, I tried China... How about it working in Japan? I'm on UK Voda network by the way. Going on holiday to both China and Japan soon.
Voda's response 'it does', I'm wary of that though because very few UK phones are known to work on the Japanese network. Voda say they have a network there now, so who knows? Whatever I'm prepared for it costing the earth!
I will give it a go, perhaps I'll be the first person ever to take a Sendo X to Japan - see what they make of it!!!
Cheers
Ok here is the thing, so long as your phone is gsm unlocked and there is a GSM network in the country you are going to running in the 900/1800 or 1900 mhz band then yes your phone will work. how well it works depends on how well the GSM network is. just as a hint instead of using your vodafone sim card in your cell phone whilst you are there I would go ahead and buy like a pre paid cell phone card unless you specifically need to be contacted on your own local number.
So how do I tell if its GSM unlocked?
Your Sendo X will not work in Japan as all the networks there are 3G and the Sendo X is not a 3G phone. If you use your SIM in a hired 3G phone then it needs to be a compatible one. Check with Vodafone on this.
That's right; the Sendo X (or any other GSM/GPRS phone) will most definitely not work in Japan. Of phones made & sold outside Japan, only WCDMA/UMTS phones will work on the Vodafone KK (formerly J-Phone) network with the Vodafone KK or a foreign SIM from an operator with a roaming agreement with Vodafone KK.
For DoCoMo you need PDC or WCDMA phones made specifically for DoCoMo. For KDDI you need CDMA phones specifically made for KDDI.
There is conflicting advice on this... it seems nobody really knows for sure as even Voda tell me it works. Clearly their staff arent trained properly if they are giving out this advice.
Is there a UK mobile that does work there then?

If a "UK mobile" is a mobile sold in the UK (not a mobile made by an UK company), then the Nokia 6650, Nokia 7600, Nokia 6630 and Nokia 6680 are WCDMA/UMTS phones that work in Japan on the Vodafone KK WCDMA network. Probably also any other WCDMA phone sold in the UK will, too.
No pure GSM/GPRS phone will work in Japan. There are no GSM/GPRS networks in Japan.
Japan's 3G networks don't use the same spec WCDMA or UTMS standards as we do, and I don't believe they have any GSM networks, so the X definitely WON'T work in Japan!
They do use the same WCDMA standards as we do; that's why WCDMA phones you buy outside Japan will work on, e.g., Vodafone KK's network in Japan. Been there, done that.
