N6600 MMC inquiry...

Hello!

I am just new here, so bare with me...

I am about to buy an SD/MMC Reader for my N6600's MMC. My understanding of MMCs are not yet that big, so I would like to ask a thing...

Based from what I've read elsewhere, MMCs are build based on a nand flash technology, quite the same memory type used by flash disks. Also, they use FAT16 so they could be read by the phone. If I plug my MMC into a reader, and plug it in to the USB port, would I be able to read the contents of my MMC just like a flash disk in My Computer, or do I need a special software to read it?

Next, I am thinking about the idea that I could buy an extra 512MB MMC, so that I could use my empty SD/MMC Reader (the other MMC being inserted to my phone) as a flash disk. If I would format the extra 512MB MMC in FAT32, would I be able to use that MMC (inserted to the reader) as a normal Flash Disk? What I wanted if possible, is that a single SD/MMC Reader would become a two-in-one tool for me; containing the formatted 512MB MMC in FAT32 as a flash disk, then it would serve to also read my phone's MMC (in FAT16) if I need to upload some files into my phone.

I would like to ask everyone there reading this post if that idea is possible... And just in case, what driver would I need in case I would use my "flash disk" in Win 98?

Thank you all for your enlightenment.

Firstly it wouldn't matter whether it's fat 32 or 16 because the reader classes it as a 'removeable drive' so its just as if you have two hard drives one fat 32 one 16 you can read and accsess each of them just as easyily as each other and you don't need special software for to do so..... if you do require drivers which you most lickly will do considering your on win 98.....

however you would have to format to the mmc to fat16 inorder to use it in your phone and im affraid you cant 'split' them as such so it would have to one or the other fat16/32

second the card reader will read and allow you to write to the mmc card with ease..... simple drag and drop....

Thanks for the reply!

Anyway, I'm not planning to "split" one MMC. Here's what I have in mind:

I would buy one SD/MMC Reader.
I would buy one 128 MMC for my PHONE
I would buy one 512 MMC as my flash disk (cuz I still dont have one)

Then, since both are new, I woudn't have to format the 128MB to be able to use it on my phone right? I would just insert my old 32 MMC in the reader, copy the contents, and transfer them into the new 128... (am I right?)

Since the 128 stays inside of the phone most of the time, I would not want my SD/MMC reader to sit idle... Thats where the 512 comes in. It would stay in the reader, and I would use the reader in such a way that it functions as a flash disks, containing not phone files but my ordinary computer files (*.doc, *.pdf, *.jpg, *.*)

So am I correct in my understanding that I do not need to format the new 512 MMC to be able to use it as a flash disk? the reader would take care of the reading issues, and I would just move any files I want directly into it just as if it were a true flash disk?

Thanks to everyone for their reply!

You are correct the 512 would work no problems in the reader straight away without the need to format..... however it depends on how the 128 is formatted it may require a format you can find this out by simply placing it into your Phone and if it requires it the phone will display a message asking if you want to format it and if you selct yes the phone will do this for you....

As for using the 512 mmc for a storage system for documents and such.... haven't you given any thought to buying a usb flash drive pen.... these are more practicle because they can be used universally across PC's providing they have usb ports... which as you probebly already know, most if not all computers come with these as standard.... you can also pick these up for realitivly cheap prices around the 1GB mark...

Yes, I've also considered that. I only considered using the 512 MMC as a flash disk because I saw my professor using his Sony Memory Stick (in some sort of a simple reader) as a flash disk. That why I thought that why will I buy another device (dedicated flash disk) if the 512 MMC in an SD/MMC Reader can do the job?

Anyway, I would still like to hear all of your opinions about using the 512 MMC as a flash disk, before I finalize my mind if I'd do that or not.

Thanks everyone!
