I'm missing having the T9 feature on the cover - does anyone suppose this will be available later with a firmware / other release, or am I stuck with what I've got?

Hi Colin, welcome to the forum. Nokia most probably left out T9 due to avoiding licensing cost to Tegic and/or because of the full QWERTY. I doubt they'll add this feature in a firmware upgrade.
I e-mailed Nokia about this (several times as they didn't seem to bothered about replying), this was there response:
Dear Sir/Madam
Thank you for contacting the Club Nokia Careline.
With regard to your email concerning the Nokia 9500, we can advise that due to it having a full keyboard inside, it does not have a T9 dictionary and this is something that is not going to change.
Please don't hesitate to contact us again if you have any further questions.
Yours sincerely

I guess they've never tried sending a txt in a busy shopping centre while using the qwerty keyboard
Aye it was the same reasoning with the 9210/9210i and I doubt it'll change with future models. TBH after a while you get used to texting without looking at it much as you do with using T9 on a normal phone. Hell so used to the keyboard now I can't text on a normal phone with or without T9.
