MMC Card - Just me?

28 replies · 4,482 views · Started 16 May 2005

is it just me, or does the X actually have something against MMC cards? i am constantly having problems with the MMC card in my phone. it is a 1gb card and every so often the X will tell me it is either not inserted or corrupt. it is only on this phone (the one that i push the most) that this happens.

bad card? anyone else in this boat?

oh, and now it will not let me do a backup. it fails about the 20% mark, then i have to reboot in order for the phone to recognize the card again.

it is an a-data mmc 1gb. i formatted in the phone the first time i used it but have since reformatted in my card reader. does that make a difference? understand that i am constantly moving things to and from the card via a card reader or bluetooth - but that is what is was meant to do. ticks me off just a bit that this is happening.

I inderstand, but it can make a difference if you format it in your cardreader. You can format in FAT or FAT32 and that does make a difference for your X.
I'm wondering though, winxp can also manage ntfs formatting, but does the X support this also?

The X (as with most devices) only supports FAT, so will not work with a memory card that's formatted as either FAT32 or NTFS.

inly formatted FAT with the card reader - trying out a spare 32MB MMC now and if this acts up will go with a 64MB SD... if that one does the same thing off to sale it goes

I don't know if you use a program called Taskspy, but when the list of apps appears, there is a background app running called unlockMMC. At a guess, it could be that this app has become corrupted by removing the MMC while a program's running. Check with TaskSpy to see if it's there. Either way, you may need to get in touch with plinkykev to get a replacement copy.

plinky - are you out there? :frown: need some help.

ok - where i am at now is back with a workable solution. i am running a backup that i made a few days ago and it is running on my 1gb mmc card.

@mas - just in case i did not explain enough yesterday, the 1gb mmc shows just shy of a gig when in the card reader and in the phone. it has 496 or so free currently, with evrything that i have on it.

the phone will not recognize the 32mb mmc card at all. i know for a fact it is a working card as it will do just fine in another handset.

the issues that i am having seem to come about when i am using applications off the mmc rahter than installed to the phone. also, i was to the point yesterday that i could not complete a restore operation to the mmc at all. it would error out about the 20% mark. so far so good today... i will keep you posted.

We've tried LOADS of MMC and SD cards. Only issues we've seen are badly formatted - FAT32/NTFS - as already mentioned, and, sadly, some "lesser" (unbranded) type cards that seem to behave badly. Not heard of your one.
We use SanDisk and Kingston in-house, and they always seem reliable. See the other S60 forums - Nokia and Siemens users have had problems with some brands too.

Another weird issue to watch out for, while we are talking cards:

We have also found that some cards are being rebadged by suppliers as lower capacity cards. ie: 128MB card has a faulty "spot" in the 70/80MB range. Card is rebadged as a 64MB card and sold on by an "unknown" brand.

PC shows as 128MB. Format seems OK. Try to copy 128MB to it - dies around 70-80MB.

Technically they are correct I guess, but a weird problem - took us a while to spot that! Actually ended up reading the code imprinted on back of the card - which shows a "128" somewhere in it, yet front label shows 64MB.

stu/kev - could a THEME cause the issues i was having? i just switched from another members theme to the vodaphone theme and the phone made a backup the first go. thoughts?

It shouldn't, as themes *SHOULD* be installed only on the phone's memory. Having said that, I have seen some which will let you install them on the memory card - had you done this?

One other thing - which theme is it you were using?

OK - last try. just bought a 1GB sandisk SD card. i will load this up when i get home this evening and attempt to restore the system files from a previous backup. if this one goes the same way as the 1GB MMC card i am all out of things to try.

perhaps it is the fact that i was using mmc instead of sd, or maybe the phone just did not like the card. we will see. i ran home over lunch and tried it out. phone read it fine, card reader did not. would not format it at all and errored out. have exchanged for new and will try again this evening.

well i was going to post that all was well and i am having no problems... however - this morning when i powered up the phone the memory card had disappeared and was not recognized. i pulled it out then reinserted it then powered the phone back on and it was there. seems like an awful lot of trouble for something that works just fine in my nokia 😡

stu/plink/mas - here is the latest. using a brand new 1gb sandisk sd card now. i just closed profimail, then went to the memory card functions to do a card backup. when i hit the right function key (backup to card) an error message showed "retry or data will be lost" followed by an error tone, immediately followed by "memory card corrupt"

WTF is going on here? this is the third card that i have tried in this handset with the same results. need some oem help here guys. thanks.

Sounds FAR too dodgy - try the card in your other handset, I think this one is screwy... 😞

Now I KNOW Sandisk is compatible - it's one of the best card makes out there. Did you manage to find out about the unlockMMC app I mentioned?

@mas - yes, it is always running to would seem (i use appman). i thought all was well but i lost about 15 minutes of video today when i took my family to the local zoo. got about seven videos and some stills shot, went for number 8 - camera appeared to be recording and saving, but when i went to open it in real player it told me the card was corrupt (go figure). downloading then all now - and as i suspected i missed the 15 minutes worth. very unhappy at this moment. ALL the cards work flawlessly in other handsets, sendo or not.

what are the warranty/replacement procedures? i would post to the "ask sendo" site but it is jacked up and never "saves" your "question" . what other options do i have - as i think this handset is not operating properly?

My "question" to Sendo support:
my handset does not like any of the various (mmc and sd) cards i have tried with it. i have used 16mb to 1gb cards of each flavor and it will show them all as "corrupted" at one point or another. i am following the procedures for removing the cards and for formatting. it does not like them for some reason. they all work fine on my second X handset with no problems. i would like this replaced or mended under warranty. please advise.

The answer:
Thank you for yuor query.

I can suggest you to try your SIM card in other phone to verify is works. In this way you can check if is a problem of the handset or the SIM card. If it is the handset you coul repair the handset and look on the user guides to refer for the warranty.

what does the SIM card have to do with the MMC/SD cards? i don't think this guy understands what i am asking 😞 and yes, this is a cut and paste, so his spelling, not mine

ive recently purchased an expansys sendo X with 1Gb MMC card, the card that it came with is a

Kingston 1GB MMCplus

Ive had no joy getting this card to work even after purchasing a card reader to make sure the card was formatted correctly (FAT file system) the card works great on my PC so i know its not the card thats faulty.

after reading around ive found a few other cards that are supposidly compatible with the sendo X

has anyone used any of thsses cards and can vouch for them?

I've used a Dana-Elec 512Mb SD card before (which is essentially a Kingston one under a different brand. It could just be me but it seems like its only 1Gb cards that are acting up.

My Viking Interworks 1GB card has worked without any problems in every handset I've thrown it at 😊
