(November 04, 2002)
The Nokia 6800 brings efficient messaging to your fingertips with full keyboard
Nokia today launched the Nokia 6800, the first messaging device optimized for efficient text input. Its innovative design means that mobile professionals can take advantage of its easy-to-use full keyboard for personal information management and messaging or otherwise inputting text. The Nokia 6800 also comes with a high-quality color display, SyncML support, email support, a stereo FM radio, JavaTM technology and can send and receive multimedia messages (MMS). Operating on GSM/GPRS 900/1800 networks, shipments of the Nokia 6800 messaging device are expected to begin in first quarter 2003 in Europe, Africa and Asia.
With the Nokia 6800, mobile professionals can manage their messages and email while on the move. Users can write messages with the cover closed or open the cover to reveal a full keyboard for easy messaging. The display image also seamlessly changes its orientation to match the horizontal layout of the keyboard. For example, users can start writing a message with the cover closed and continue after opening the cover.
The unique design of the Nokia 6800 enables mobile professionals to be as efficient as possible while away from the office. In todays world, messaging is a cornerstone of business life and the Nokia 6800 allows people to message efficiently without any compromise in the features they have come to expect from Nokia. The full keyboard and excellent color display are ideal when users are creating text messages, multimedia messages or email, said Erik Anderson, Senior Vice President, Business Applications, Nokia Mobile Phones. Other technology features, such as Java and SyncML, mean that users of the Nokia 6800 can have more personalized content, Java games and synchronization capabilities, making it a versatile device for both work and leisure.
A powerful set of technology features helps Nokia 6800 users manage their work and personal lives with maximum convenience. JavaTM technology allows users to download personalized applications either using the WAP 1.2.1 browser or from a PC via the Nokia PC Suite. The Nokia 6800 also has a mobile email client (supporting POP3, IMAP4 and SMTP) that lets users manage their email quickly over HSCSD and GPRS networks. The notes application allows users to type notes of up to 3000 characters.
The Nokia 6800, via its Pop-PortTM connector, supports the Nokia Camera Headset, also launched today, which enables users to take digital images to send as MMS messages to other compatible MMS-enabled phones.* The Nokia 6800 messaging device also supports car kit installation with a mobile holder.
SyncML compatibility allows users of the Nokia 6800 to synchronize personal data remotely over the network. With SyncML, personal data such as calendars and contact information can be consistent, accessible and up-to-date.
The Nokia 6800 also incorporates a mobile wallet application, which allows users to make convenient and reliable online transactions via WAP. The security module, Wireless Identity Module (WIM), enables users to digitally sign their transactions, and includes Wireless Public Key Infrastructure (WPKI) support.
Polyphonic ringtones and an integrated stereo FM radio offer a high-quality sound experience, together with an integrated handsfree speaker that makes it possible to conduct a conference call or listen to the radio.** When speaking on the phone, users can activate the integrated handsfree speaker by opening the cover and continuing to talk while accessing calendar information or sending a message.
The Nokia 6800 weighs 122 g and has a talk time of up to 3 to 7 hours and a standby time of up to 7 to 15 days.
Developers interested in creating software applications the Nokia 6800 can source product specifications, get technical assistance and download tools from Forum Nokia, Nokia's global developer program, at http://www.Forum.Nokia.com.

Here's an image, doesn't look Symbian like to me. Oh well 😞
I think you are right Rafe,my guess is NOS.
By the way, that is the weirdest thing i've ever seen.
I dont think that 6800 is the new communicator. Isn`t it a multimedia device with video capabilitys or third party software, etc. The QUERTY keyboard is just to "efficient messaging to your fingertips ".
I think that we will have to wait a little more.
I was hoping for a new 9XXX device. 😞
looks weird but worth checking... just wondering if it's symbian, looks not.
well judging by the way it looks, the keyboard looks difficult to type into.
and looks like it ain't a communicator...
and the screen is small... 😞
I think its the rumoured device, but it not the new communicator we know is in development. Looks like it will be spring for the Nokia 9310 and Nokia 7650i. I was suprised not to see another Symbian phone though.
May be that you can get 640x480 using monitor output.
Is ugly man, hope they won`t release it
that's why nokia modeled it as 6800 and not a 9xxx. it isn't a communicator...
well, we still don't have the full specs. worth checking out though.
😃 😃 😃 😃 😃 😃 😃 😃 😃 😃 😃 😃 😃 😃 😃
heheheheeeeeeeee!|
yupeeee.. no new communicator yet!
my 9210i is still the latest communicator
i told u, it's only a rumour.
they've just released the communicator in the states. the next communicator will be the 3G device... !
byebye
I like it, But I think I would brake it when I try to use the keyboard 😊
Here is what I think
I knew I would find the info here! Nokia site is jammed.
Of course I tried to concentrate on my work, but somehow I just had to find out if there is a new communicator.
I'm glad there isn't. Don't have to drool over something new when I'm just learning to enjoy my old one. 😃
and happy birthday :bday: to whoever has birthday today!
There is a new Symbian device after all...

They get games from Sega ... maybe the lucky bastards get sonic :s
Mmmm You think Sega would be interested to port Sonic to the 92xx? 😊

Mmmm You think Sega would be interested to port Sonic to the 92xx? 😊[/quote] :robot:
well maybe these games will work on a 7650 or on a 3650 too, since these phones and this new "device" 😮 😮 are based on the same Series60 UI
I am much disappointed with Nokia... all the phones they presented today are either for VERY young people, or just "enhancements" for phones already out in the market (i.e. only color display is the new "feature"😉 :agrue:
but neverhteless I am HAPPY :bday: because it once again seems that 7650i is either a "fake" or that it will be out in a long time anyway... so I can still feel I own the best smartphone around the world :black:
and... well this last line... just to test other new icons :fadein:
OH my god, that Nokia 6800 looks stunning, I absolutely adore the double keypad feature! Its no replacement for the 9210i, buts well worth a place in my pocket!
I'II be having one of those!   :bday: :bday:
Folks,
I am a little confused. Is the 6800 a Symbian device or not ?!
--alex
From the Nokia site, it is not a Symbian machine , it is a Series 40 machine using Nokia OS :
"Nokia 6800 adheres to the Series 40 UI design, allowing developers to leverage their investment in applications designed for other Series 40 devices including Nokia 5100, 6100, 6610, 7210, and 7250. The display offers a total resolution of 128 x 128 pixels with a pallet of 4096 colors; after allowance for status display the developer's canvas is 128 x 96. Nokia UI API's FullCanvas makes it possible to use whole screen. In addition to the Series 40-standard key interface, Nokia 6800 offers a full QWERTY keyboard revealed with a twist of the display. As the user reveals the keyboard, the device automatically re-orients the display for optimal viewing. This full keyboard provides an efficient user interface to business applications such as email, calendar, and messaging.
- Full Support
Developers can build applications for Nokia 6800 using a full set of tools from Nokia. Messaging applications can be built using Nokia Developer's Suite for MMS . Browsing applications are supported by Nokia Mobile Internet Toolkit 3.1 . Nokia Developer's Suite 1.0 for J2ME including Nokia 6310i MIDP SDK Beta 0.9 supports Java MIDP development and integrates with the most popular Java development environments or can be used as a stand-alone tool."
Regards,
Roberto
Roberto,
thanks - that makes things much clearer !
Hope to see a Symbian device incorporating some of the good ideas of the 6800, though...

The current 3G phone is the 6650, a dual band GSM/WCDMA phone, with full motion camera :robot: But, it's just that, a phone, & it's not even a 'videophone' cause the camera is on the opposite side to the screen, so you could see who you were talking to. Oh well, the Nokia R&D guys are just too ugly & don't think anyone would want to see them 😮
Wow...who's the mysterious guest giving precious info...??!! Maybe one of the technicians working on the new communicator... 😉
