Editing Orange Homescreen on 6680?

What do you mean with "editing" it, exactly?

In any case, if you want to remove it, you can't (without getting the phone flashed with a non-Orange version of the phone's firmware).

No there's no way of editing (well actually that's not entirely true) - you can fiddle with the XML files that do some of the configuration (e.g. change the name of some of the 'menu' options. But that doesn't really serve any useful purpose.

Removing it is not an option either. Theoretically you could develop an app to replace it.

Flashing the firmware to an alternative (non-orange version) is the only way to get rid of the Orange customisation.

Its worth living with it for a while, becauyse I found I didn't really midn it after a while. It is just I don't like changing from the standard Series 60 idle screen because I switch phone a fair amount. Incidentally you can get at the standard screen by selecting Telephone from the apps list (when holding down the application key). Unfortunately Active Idle screen has been removed as an option.

I'm afraid to say i don't agree with you one little bit. What Orange have done to the 6680 is a travisty.

They have taken away functionally away from it. For example.

To go to contacts on the 6630, was a simple click of the joypad. 6680 two clicks.

To open a new message from an unlocked state, 6630 one button press. 6680 5 button presses.

Themes don't work as well on the 6630

I will be getting my 6680 flashed to non-orange asap.

I honestly don't think it that bad, however I would in preference use a phone without it (but that as I said above is a lot to do with swicthing phones). I've set up Contacts as one of my shortcuts on the softkeys, but I agree the removal of the quick access to that and messaging is the most irritating thing about the Orange Home Screen. I haven't really come across themes problems, but then I don't use them that much.

Orange have taken awat stuff, but arguably they've added it too. Its also the same user experience across their signature phones. Same on the C500 and the P910 - which is good for people switching one Orange phone for another. Its the price you pay for getting a subsidy on your phone.

Do you mean the Orange background on the main phone screen with the icons doen the left hand side?

Its changeable, I changed mine the day I got the phone.

I changed the rest using a new theme so when i hold down the blue key and select phone I don't get the orange branding there either.

To be honest the removal of the horrible bright orange front screen made the icons down the side far less offensive and I actually discovered that I quite like them now.

I think initially I rebelled when i opened the box and though wot the french connection! A bright orange screen with another bright orange screen and a bright orange screensaver!!!! Nooooooooooooooo...and then 10 mins later, a new theme, a pic of my dog and screensaver changed.

...how exactly did you change the homescreen picture? Could you give me a step by step please...

Cheers
Nick

OK.

Well like I said you can't change the icons down the left hand side but to change the background picture off of the Orange glow.

  • Using the navigation/joypad key go up two to the camera icon
    Select Background
Browse to the picture you want instead of the default
If you need to change drives the option is at the top of the list if you have a lot of images it takes a few seconds while it reads them all.
When you're on the picture you want as your background just click the navigation/joypad key.
    Ta-daaa

If you decide you actually wanted the Orange glow after this you can ether browse to it as above or......

  • Using the navigation/joypad key go up two to the camera icon
    Select Background
Using the left key (select) choose option "Default Background"
    The Orange is back!

...that easy!!! Now why on earth wouldn't I think of going to the camera app for the wallpaper...

...many thanks...

Cheers
Nick

How did you change the screensaver? I only seem to have the option to use the Orange one or date/time or text?

Standard phone only has Date and Time, Text or Orange screensaver

There are several applications out there that enable you to select a different screen saver but not sure if any of these work on 6680 especially with orange homescreen.
They work independant of the nokia screensaver so there could be conflicts

For background image i advise NOT using "set as background"
Using this destorts the image on the homescreen
For best effects follow the instructions in the link below

Do you know where these XML files are located on the file system? I tried finding them with FExplore, but no luck so far... 😞
