I've just been away on holiday for a couple of weeks, and my Orange 6630 has seemed to be somewhat jinxed. :frown:
Took 2 phones with me my 6630 so that I could be contacted by friends & family, and my N-Gage QD to use with a local SIM card.
Arrived in Hong Kong on Friday the 15th. On Sunday 17th I pulled my 6630 out of my pocket, and 😱 the backlight was partially not working and the LCD was cracked down the middle. I must have knocked it somehow, but it seems terribly fragile as the front cover was unmarked. Is there any good mechanical protection available for this model so it doesn't happen again?
The rest of my travel story, if you're interested...
I did get the phone fixed in Hong Kong. I phoned Orange first (Sim plus QD), got through to someone who told me that as I didn't have Orange's insurance I would have to wait until I came back to the UK, and pay some obscene amount to get a replacement Orane phone. Customer Service? Customer uselessness. 😡 I can now buy an unlocked 6630 from Expansys for not much more - and what I really cared about was getting at the information and contacts for the rest of my trip.
I had some lucky finding a Nokia Care centre .5 km from where I was staying. I asked to have the LCD replaced, but they wanted to test it first. (In case the system board was damaged too.) Said test put the clerk's SIM in my phone, and tried to call it from their desk phone. Of course this didn't work, as the phone is locked to Orange UK. It seems they aren't used to dealing with 'network locked' handsets. 🙄
I explained that I could switch the phone on with the Orange SIM and that it beeped when I sent it a SMS from my QD. So they accepted it for repair, the cost was HK$420 for the inspection fee and HK$400 for the LCD replacement. HK$820 = approx UK 60.
I collected the phone in the evening, and it worked perfectly! 😊
Luckily I copied the most vital information for trip on to paper. Two days later I flew on to Beijing. Both phones were working fine, I switched them off. After the flight I switched them both on again: the QD was fine but the 6630 started being very cranky - games ran fine but important stuff like opening Contacts, setting an alarm wouldn't work. 😞
Fortunately I am home now, with Internet access, and have found the solution to this latter problem in the AAS forums. 😉 I.e. deleting the corrupt T9 dictionary file c:\system\data\PTIT9UDB0f.DAT with FExplorer, as recommended by 'spinergy'. (I was dreading the alternative of another encounter with Orange customer service.)
