Now! screen refuses to start with new firmware

Hi,

Big problem here with the new firwmare. Installed it, reformated the phone (boot with '5' key), restarted and everything was fine, including the Now! screen. I then restored all my data from the memory card. Went fine too. The problem arrived after closing the memory card application once the restoring process was complete: Now! crashed with the "App closed Now!" message. No way to restart it, it always crashes.

The phone works fine otherwise (lucky me, i've got the Sendo X keyboard, which allows me to access the menu), but Now! just refuses to start (i've tried to reboot the phone too to no avail). Deleted the PaneSettings.ini and Wallpaper.ini files but that didn't change anything; Now! recreates the default ones and then crashes. This is slighly annoying to say the least.

Help!

Solved.

While exploring my C: drive on the phone trying to find what file could cause Now! to crash, i've spotted for the first time since i've got my X the 'C:\System\favourites' folder. Why it never occured to me before to have a look at what contained this folder remains to be explained. Anyway, this folder was containing loads of links to loads of applications. Since the Now! screen has a Favourites panes, this was a potential source of problems. So i've renamed this folder to 'favourites2' and created an empty 'favourites' folder to replace it. Tried to start the Now! screen and, joy, it worked 😎

I had exactly the same problem (you've got Vodafone firmware, right?) a few reformats does the trick.

1) 5-format the phone
2) Whack on the new firmware
3 5-format again and it should be peachy.

No i don't have the Vodaphone firmware. Bought it SIM free from Expansys without any Vodaphone stuff on it. Reformated the phone 3 times without any improvments. Only the favourites folder trick solved my problem.

After installing the new firmware the now! screen shows a very strange behavior. After create a new panel, all of the shortcuts will stop to the favorites. Haul of that, the favorites have the shortcuts in English, and my version is the Portuguese. Am I alone? Adding the GPRS failure, im not very happy.

Sorry, I am not sure to really understand what you mean. What i have noticed is that the behaviour of the Now! screen has changed quite a bit with the new firmware.

Before, adding an application link with the "Application link" command in the options menu resulted in a link to the selected application to appear in the current pane.

With the new firmware, doing the exact same thing results in... nothing. But actually, if you go to the Panes settings, you'll see that a new setting called "App links" has appeared. And there are your application links. You can place a check mark in front of any application you want to have in your pane.

I don't really understand the logic behind that but this is not really a problem. The problem is that if you add more than 29 links to symbian applications in there, the Now! screen goes mad and the next time it'll try to start (whenever you'll reboot your phone for example), it'll enter an infinite loop of crazy flickering and freezing and it will *never* manage to actually start.

The only way i have found to get the phone back to work when this happens is to use the Sendo X keyboard and try to access the menu (with Fn-menu). It takes a while before the menu appears because the Now! screen is using all the processor's ressources with its infinite loop. Once you're in the menu, start TaskSpy or AppMan and kill the Now! screen. Then use FExplorer or ProfiExplorer and go to C:\System\favourites. Here are all the application links. Simply delete a few links so that there is less than 30 links to symbian apps in the folder and restart. The Now! screen then starts fine.

This problem means that the Now! screen is not really usable anymore unless you've got less than 30 links to symbian apps in it.
