My Nokia 6630 / Voda Nightmare!

6 replies · 3,689 views · Started 07 July 2005

Way back in march, i canceled my old orange contract got my mac code and wandererd happily down to the local voda shop to get my shiney new Nokia 6630. and paid 100 for the privilage.

The happyness soon faded.

I soon read about the firmware having a problem with showing the text messages in the screensaver but more importantly I found that the phone would switch itself off even though it had plenty of charge. After having experienced this about 5 times i decided to take the phone back to the shop and have it sent away for repair.

When i requested the repair i staded specifically i wanted the latest firmware which fixed the text message problem and allegedly the switch off problem.

After waiting nearly 2 weeks the phone arrived back, wiped clean. I looked at the firmware and it had not been upgraded. It became clear within hours of picking the phone up it was still experiencing the problem. so i went back to voda again and again requested the phone be repaired and software upgraded. Again after a long wait it came back and the phone had not been upgraded and the problem was still there.

I had been told by the staff in the shop that after two repairs it would be replaced with a new handset, however when i asked about this they then told me its 3 times! so i went through to voda direct through their support number 191.

They agreed to send me another phone. a refurbished 6630 which had the latest updates. Next day (shock) the new handset arrived and at last it had a new firmware. The text problem had gone and i thought that the shutdown problem had been fixed and to this day it hasnt switched off. But it seems that in place of it switching off the phone goes dead whilst looking like its working. For instance it shows battery and reception yet i cant recieve calls, people just get the awnser machine and if i try and make a call it just hangs on the calling bubble and never gets anywhere. If i switch the phone off and on it then works for a while again.

As far as im aware and have read across a few forums, the problem is caused when the phone moves from 3g area to 2g area, so on the orig phone its reaction was to switch off and on the new one it just simply hangs the phone out.

I phoned vodaphone about this and they have told me i could exchange for another model of phone, this is something i dont particularly want to do, i got the 6630 for a reason i like the phone! Everyone on every other network has no problems, yet a friend with the same phone and network has the same exact problem.

Over various conversations with the exchange dept they tell me i can swap for a Sony Ericsson v800i which is 3g or for a SOny ericsson s700i or samsung d500. None of which i particularly like and most dont have the features of my nokia.

I asked about the 6680 but they tell me its at a cost of 100 which i find an insult as i already paid 100 for a nokia symbian and it does not work. They also said the 6680 would have the same problem, which sounds like rubbish to me, they said its a 3g problem (again rubbish).

Do I have a case here?

im thinking when i get home i write a letter to them stating the history and asking for either a replacement phone of a 6680 or a working 6630 (unlikely) or i ask for my 100 back and my contract to be ended immidiatly.

Anyone had to deal with voda in this way before?

please forgive my spelling, im not in the best of moods.

Hi Funy,

My 6630 firmware is V 3.45.113 I'm with Orange ref 3G to GSM switching you can switch the 3G off so that it remains on GSM which will make the battery last alot longer too. So goto: Tools-Settings-Network using the options/open then in Network mode click options- change and change from dual mode to GSM at least we can do this on Orange so I'm presuming you'll be able to do it on Vodafone.

Actually it is a 3G problem, There is nothing wrong with your handset, I had the same problem with my 6630, and when I upgraded to my 6680 it got progressivly worse until it was unusable at home unless I switched to 2G mode.

After many phone call I eventually got through to the second level technical service, they checked it out and esstentially what was happening was when I was at home and in 3G coverage the transmitter wasn't registering my phone on the 3G network even though my phone showed me as connected to 3G.

They told me that the transmitter cell I was connected at home to was the problem, sent an enginneer out to have a look at it, and upgraded it.

Since then I have had no problems.

The test is to see if it happens in just one area, ie: at home, check to see if when you move in the area of another cell the reception is ok (I drove 5 miles, rang my voicemail, it worked, went home and I couldn't receive or make any calls etc, even though I had full signal)

As I said since Vodafone repaired the transmitter cell I have had no problems whatsoever.

Run the same checks as I did, also try the handset in 2G mode, it will work perfectly, then call Vodafone and tell them it is not a handset problem, and ask to speak to an enginneer, explain what I have told you, they will log the fault and check out the cell, hopefully sorting your problem.

Funy, I had exactly the same problem with my 6630 on Vodafone. I sent it back, specifically requesting the latest firmware and it came back with 2.39.151 (or whatever it was). Meaning the phone had the same problems.

When I rang vodafone, I was told the phone had been discontinued and they would not be releasing a new firmware for it. Hence I was stuck at 2.39.

What firmware do you have now ? Is it Vodafone Branded firmware ? And what exactly did you do to get it ?

K.

to get the latest firmware i had to have the phone replaced by voda, they send you a "refurb" one which means they replaced the case and cleaned out the insude and wiped the phone. mine had a newer firmware when it came back.

hope this helps.

i think i got 4.03 ot something now, up from 3.45

Not strickly true then... its a Vodagroan 3G problem as opposed to a 3G problem as I have never had such problems on my Three 6630.
