still GSM connection drops - is there ever going to be a real fix?

9 replies · 2,982 views · Started 07 July 2005

ok, got my Sendo X with the new version 78 Firmware and still I need to reboot the phone to renew my GSM connection occasionally. Is this problem ever really going to get fixed properly?

Also, my phone still says I am on Cingular when the sim is a T-Mobile chip. Is this ever going to get fixed right??

Thanks

Due to the fact that the company no longer exists; the capability to product the binaries no longer exists, the manpower now work for Motorola, oh and the licence no longer exists, I think the answer is "no".

Am not sure if the details on your sim are being read from the sim card or not, I can't be sure if that is actually a problem with the phone or an integration issue with the sim card.

Sorry.

Where can I find the sendo site that enables you to configure your Sendo X using your phone number? I am trying to create the internet accesspoint and such.

ALSO, are you recommending I try a different SIM? Does anyone else have the same problem?

And why would this problem still exist?

The network name is read from the SIM card - the phone detects the network code, which will be something like 234-33 (that's the code for Orange in the UK) - the SIM then holds the translation table which tells the phone what text to display for that network.

I'm presuming T-Mobile bought Cingular - in that case, you'd need a SIM update to update the SIMs translation table to display the new name.

The Sendo OTA bit of software hasn't worked for weeks - it wasn't actually run by Sendo anyway, so they had no control over it. You could use Nokia's config. utility on their website - just pretend you've got a 7650 or 3650.

Actually, stu could not be more wrong.

The 2 codes, Mobile country code MCC, mobile network code MNC ( 234,15 on uk/vf ) are read from the System Information pages sent on the broadcast channel of the cell that the phone is attached to.

This code is translated by the PHONE, not SIM.

There may be a network name on the SIM ( and this is rare, restricted mainly to virtual operators like virgin in the UK and CPHS operators such as T-mobile and Orange ), but that is only for the home network. If the home network matches ( ie, the mcc/mnc is the same as the first 6 digits of the IMSI ) then the phone will display the name on the sim ( if there ) and if not there then the name in the phones table

If the codes do not match then the network name will be that in the phones table.

The problem that blahblabber seems to be having is that T-mobile and Cingular SHARE their network with each other. So, sometimes he's on t-mobile and sometimes he's on cingular . A list of whom cingular share resources with can be found here.

So, infact the handset is working as it should..... kind of. What his main problem is relates to the fact that he did not buy the phone from T-MOBILE, and probably from a european distributor/operator ( whom very rarely use local roaming because they have much smaller geographical areas to cover ) . If he had of done ( bought the phone form T-Mobile USA ) , then the phone would be set up specifically to recognise local roaming partners of that network like cingular and NOT change the name to cingular. I'm pretty sure that sendo never sold this phone in the USA right?

Basically, its not a bug, its something that if buy the phone from a completely different continent is just an unfortunate quirk.

Hope that clarifies the situation with regards to "wrong network name displayed "

Ok - I was wrong, but almost half right 😉

I was presuming that the Cingular / T-Mob relationship was like a virtual network, or like when One2One changed their name to T-Mob in the UK. That change was done by a SIM update, so I presumed the SIM could over-rule the phone.

If, however, (as you say) T-Mob are roaming over Cingular, then, yes, the phone's doing what I would expect it to. (if you stick a "3" USIM into the X in the UK, it displays O2, as that's who it's roaming on)

WOW.... it could not make any more sense. This is exactly what is going on. I guess I will have to live with it.

dont worry blahblahbber I experienced it when I drove from Texas through to Indiana and my phone was switching through all the networks, t-mobile, at&t, cingular and throught he rural areas just numbers, actually I find it interesting that the phone will actually show the proper name of the network you are using, never actually had that happen, it was usually locked to the sim

the only thing i will add is that my #3 handset (my primary) will LOOK like it loses the gprs lock - meaning that the icon changes from g with a box to "just g" - but it never loses the signal itself. i found myself checking email "just because" and sending those (you know who you are 😉 ) "am i still here" messages over agile messenger because it appeared i had lost the signal.

make sense?

I would say that the behaviour of this firmware w.r.t. network names has changed, but for the better for me. My X has a Virgin Mobile SIM. VM are an MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) using T-Mobile as a carrier.

Using the original firmware, the phone displays Virgin as the network. The version before the current one shows T-Mobile most of the time, with Virgin only appearing fleetingly. The new firmware is all Virgin, all of the time. Except when it's Searching...
