also, I get a white screen and cannot boot into my OS after a restore. Any ideas as to why?
I have to clear the memory with the 5 key in order to boot completely...

If you're trying to restore a backup which contains theme elements, then you will receive errors. If you didn't remove all themes before upgrading, then you'll receive the white screen and the phone won't boot. Both these are due to changes made to Now!
If you format the phone by pressing the 5 key it should then boot normally. If you're backup doesn't contain any themes, it should then restore ok.

So I guess I have to add the theme BEFORE I restore the phones memory if my backup requires the theme?

(once you've got a "new" backup (one taken AFTER you've installed the new firmware) then you can restore without having themes installed if you re-format the phone again)

Nothing works, I just created a new restore point in the SD card instead. I tried 4-5 different combinations with no progress.
blah - sounds like your handset problems continue to plague you.
here is my 2 cents -
remove the mmc/sd card from your phone
remove the sim card from the phone
reformat using pwr-5
reflash the firmware
reformat again using pwr-5
reinstall everything from scratch and do not use a backup
i had to do this on handset #1 at one point and it was the only way i could get it to come around. pain in the a s s but worth the extra hassle.
Have to agree with what Mark said...
P.I.T.A, but sometimes the best way to fix a dodgy upgrade!
