Nokia 6600 to Nokia 9300 - HOW...

Now that I have my 9500, my wife has tried and then we saw the 9300 we wants to get one for her - at the moment she is using a 6600 (Series 60).

I am not clear if such a migration is possible without some problems.

1. PC Suite.

PC Suite 6.6.16 is quite good however it is not compatible with the 6600 to such an extent that the PC Suite for Nokia 6600 does not seem to work properly with this installed.
Windows XP Service Pack 2 using MS Bluetooth was being used.

The only thing I can do here sofar is use another computer to take a backup of the 6600 contacts etc.

I considered if a files can be transferred via the MMC - however there are 2 problems with that: the first one is that there is a 'backup to memory card' on Series 60 like there is on Series 80 - and secondary the files are not compatible.

The obvious files to copy across if they were would be:
logdbu
contacts.cdb
calendar
The message store.

Yet issue here is that the Nokia 6600 wipes the 'general log' if we were to
swap SIM cards.

2. Email.

This is not a problem as such because I just redo the settings and download the messages again.

3. SMS/MMS etc.

Much more problematic - I cannot think of a way migrate SMS and MMS messages between a 6600 and 9300.

4. Calendar/To do entries.

This should be possible if a can get PC Suite Working expect I need to use a machine with full MS Office version of Outlook of course.
Again see point 1.

5. Contacts.

Is there any way to have the 9300 and 9500 read the Series 60 'contacts.cdb' or another machine so that the pictures and extra contact lines (that Outlook cannot handle) can be transferred.

6. Games.

The Communicator version of Bounce has always been the best.
Can I still use the Nokia 9210 Bounce Level Enpansion packs to add levels 12-21 to an already installed 9300/9500 version of Bounce.
Related to this where is the 'Bounce Back' game (the sequal that I have heard of).

Secondary: Java applet games.
I have noticed that some simple JAVA applet games work in the 9500 so what about JAVA games for Series 60 - has anybody tried to see.
Obviously I am talking about playing them on the PDA side.

This might be useful especially as Rayman 9210 does not work on the 9300/9500 but perhaps the JAVA version for the 6600 can be downloaded and might.

I really hope that somebody who works for Nokia reads this.
The points made here are simple - people still use the 6600 (so perhaps allow the earlier Series 60 phones to use the later software - 9210 is not a problem - I was able to migrate because there was a proper program for that) and being able to migrate from Series 60 to Series 80 may well result in more Nokia 9300s being sold (which no bad thing).

The only way to transfer data is via sync'in with PC suite. From 6600 suite to outlook, then outlook to 9500

The emails cannot be backed up or transfered between two said devices.

3. SMS/MMS etc.

This cannot be done.

5. Contacts.

Is there any way to have the 9300 and 9500 read the Series 60 'contacts.cdb' or another machine so that the pictures and extra contact lines (that Outlook cannot handle) can be transferred.

The two .cdb files cannot be swapped between devices. The only way is to sync with outlook in the middle.

6. Games.

The JAVA motto is complie once deploy anywhere, yes some s60 java apps work on the s80 devices but you have to take into considersation the differnce in formcactor, screen and key layout. They will work just not as you have expected.

Everything you are asking is possible, just not with earliy s60 devices like the 6600, from the 7610 onward all s60 & s80 device are compatible in the way that you have mentioned via PC suite.

1. Calendar/Contacts.

It appears that it's possible to install the PC Suite for 6600 first (making sure there is no trace of any other PC suite).
This I plan to do.

I also found out that if the '.cdb' file is renamed and copied to the memory
card as per the 9210 - the contacts application open open the Series 60
contacts file - but the contacts are a bit corrupted - they can be copied
into the normal contacts file and edited - this way the contact pictures
manage to be migrated.

I plan to perform that experiment using my 9210 and then transfer that 'cdb'
to to the 9300.

2. Email -
Email account be transferred - unless it's saved in an IMAP account and
is downloaded again with the new device.
I know that there isn't a proper way to migrate the message store
between any Nokia phone - even with the 'data mover' from the
9210 to 9500.

3. Conclusion -
Actually there a quite a few 6600's out there I suspect and it would be quite likely to be a need to migrate from a 6600 to a 6680 for example.
It's a shame because the 9300 and 6600 both use Symbian 7 - just the UI and applications differ.
All Nokia need to do is add Series 60 version 1 support to the latest PC
Suite and live will be so much easier.

As for my 9210 - this well works with 9210i PC suite in the same system without issue however most PCs now don't bother with serial ports so it's difficult to connect it to some notebooks. USB serial port dongles are getting harder to find.

Hmm this raises another question - backups on the 9210 PC Suite write individual files into a directory but the backup utility with the latest PC Suite 6.6 - creates a single file archive - how would I extract individual files from this without restoriing them to the 9500 - in case I wanted to transfer them to a 9210.
The intent to is keep the 9210 as a backup phone.

This is important if your phone is part of your life (as Commicator's really are).
My first 9210 was partly eaten by a large dog - the displays were broken internally but it still made calls and a was able to take a backup afterwards.

In am not clear how rugged the 9500 really is over time - but it least we can change the keyboard, a common fault with the 9210 was the '2' and '5' keys stop working and the hinges crack - thankfully on the 9500 the data cable is not located
by the hinges.
