I got a pair of pop-port Nokia HS-3 headphones, and eagerly plugged them in to try and listen to some mp3 music in stereo. Unforunately, what I get is the music mixed down to MONO and played over both sides. I've attached a simple stereo test file, where the first four notes are played over both channels, and the last for notes alternated from left to right.
Can anyone advise whether I am doing something wrong, or perhaps whether the 9500 is not truly Stereo capable - or mine is broken.

Both the 9500 and 9300 generates STEREO sound output.

Have you verified this? Mine certainly does not generate Stereo when mp3 files are played.

Well, I can easily tell the difference between mono and stereo... The kind of music I listen to sounds horrible in mono. I guess you have either a defect unit or a defect headset. I've also played some of the same tracks on other portable stereo enabled devices, and they sound the same. So, yes, I'm sure it is stereo.

I'm very annoyed.
The problem is my Nokia HS-3 WH headset. I could not get it working in stereo, so I did the logical thing and disassembled it 😃 There is no way I can imagine that the HS-3 could have operated in stereo, since the wires from the right and left earpieces were soldered together (R+ to L+ and R- to L-).
Inside the little box halfway up the headset, there is a microphone and switch, presumably to be able to hold and talk or something. I tried bypassing these since all I want is a stereo headset.
I tried wiring the headphones according to the pinouts that I could find, but no combination seems to result in stereo.

Does anyone know what the trick is here? This should be fairly straightforward, but each time I connect the right ear to 13,14 and the left to 11,12 - the sound plays in mono.

Maybe the HS-3 is a mono headset? At least HDS-3 is stereo.

There are also mods you can do that will allow you to use regular headsets. I know people have been doing this to their 9300/9500. I'm sure you can find out more if you search the forum.
