I am wondering whether nokia 9500's MMC Slot supports SD cards? I have read that they are practically the same with the SD card being more advanced but and the MMC card has an extra pin.
Normal SD cards by sandisk, kingmax, kingston etc.

No SD. Just MMC, or RS-MMC (half-length; RS = Reduced Size) with an adapter that you get with them.
SD cards are thicker and with more pins. Devices that accept SD also accept MMC, but vice versa is not true.
