One way to migrate from a Sony-Ericsson P800 phone to P910i. 2005-07-23.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I had a well working P800. It fell in the water and went bad. I was unable to find
another P800 on the market, so I bought a P910i instead.
Bad news time: Sony-Ericsson tells me I can't restore my latest P800 backup .ecs-file to the P910i, they are different creatures. So, I can't get my hands on a P800 to restore the files and then syncronize them. I have a HUGE contaktsfile and agendafile. The jotterfile isn't small either not to mention all the .xls-files and .doc-files.
What to do? Some Internet sites gave me some clues. Here is what I did:
0. Make a complete backup of the p910i using the PC-suite software. If you mess
with the wrong file, the phone will need a complete restore.
1. Make a copy of you latest .ecs-file made by the P800 backupprogram. Please
work on the copy, winzip may change some file attributes.
2. Run it through winzip to unzip it. What you get is a directory with files
named 1.dat, 2.dat, ..., nnnn.dat, where nnnn may be a number several thousands large. In the directory are also other files, one is called filerestore.dat.txt.
3. Lets start with the agendafile. Look in filerestore.dat.txt for a file named
"C:\documents\Agenda\Agenda" and take a note of the number at the beginning of that line. Let's say it was 1817. Now, copy file 1817.dat to another directory and rename it "Agenda".
4. Now do the contactsfile. Find "C:\system\data\Contacts.cdb", copy it and name
it Contacts.cdb.
5. Same thing with the jotterfile. Find "C:\documents\Jotter\Jotter", copy it
and name it "Jotter".
6. If everything went well, "Agenda","Contacts.cdb" and "Jotter" are now in some
directory on your computer.
7. Now bring home and install "PC File Manager 1.0" from www.epocware.com. You may do up to 20 filetransfers before you have to pay for the product. If you
like it, buy it.
8. Since the three files mentioned earlier are in use on an active P910i, they
can't be copied to a phone that is up and running. Here's the trick:
Start a backup of the P910i using the PC-suite software. When the phone has
rebooted and entered backupmode, press Cancel in the backup-program. With a
little luck, the phone remains i backupmode. If not, try again.
9. Now start "PC File Manager". You should now be able to copy any file you want
onto the P910i. Copy and replace the three files mentioned earlier to their
paths mentioned in paragraph 3-5.
10. Exit "PC File Manager" and start the backupprogram again. The P910i should now restart. Exit the backupprogram.
11. When the phone comes up again, you should have your agenda, calendar and jotter-files in place and working!
12. Most other userfiles can be transferred using PC-suite and/or memory cards.
If not, use the same method mentioned earlier.
If this little description helps at least one other user in the world, it was
worth writing down.
