A while ago, my X would no longer go into charging mode when switched off and plugged into the mains adaptor. Instead of showing the Charging screen it looked like it was continually switching itself on and off. If I left it switched on (properly switched on, that is), however, it would charge, and animate the battery symbol at top left as normal.
This first happened when I tried to charge a spare battery that I had just bought and I thought: how could the battery fo this?
Yesterday I came across this http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/forum//forum/thread/37094/&highlight=agile+mordred
and I followed the advice there. My X now charges normally when switched off, and I now realise the new battery was a red herring and I must have installed Agile Messenger at about that time.
So, I have a question: how can an app change the charging behaviour when the app isn't running, and even when the phone is switched off?
I've asked Sendo about this... while I don't have a complete answer for you, I have some insight into what's happening.
First of all, this problem isn't specific to the X - it's seen on other manufacturer's series 60 phones as well!
From what I understand is happening, when the phone is put on charge while turned off, it goes into a reduced boot mode, whereby it starts up only part of it's operating system (just enough to run the battery meter and charging software) - while it's doing this no other applications should be running. However, it seems that AgileMessenger is trying to load part of itself at this stage (the AGILEAUTHSERVER I think), which as it's not allowed to run in reduced boot mode, causes the phone to restart. Of course, on restarting the same happens...
The old version of Agile seems to work differently. I haven't used it for some time (as my phones stay on, I don't get hit by the charging bug), but at a guess, the AGILEAUTHSERVER basically doesn't start up in this older version.

So a part of Agile (in the latest version but not the older one) tries to start up at boot time regardless, even if you have not set anything for it to do so? This is not good behaviour for an app on any platform!
Thanks for a most informative reply 😊
Yep, that seems to be it. And from what I can tell (if you have Agile installed, start your phone normally, then look at running processes), it's the AGILEAUTHSERVER process which is doing it.
as i said in my thread, both here and at sendosmartphones.com faq - just downgrade to the version in post three and you will be fine.

Which is what I did- see start of this thread. I was just after an explanation of how an app could have such an effect. It's OK now, thanks. 😊
ok - my bad. no sleep, headache and soaking wet from walking a short distance from the lot to the office in the rain has affected my reading 😮
honestly i think you would need to ask agile about the code difference in the two versions. maybe you can get somethiing going and help the rest of us! :icon14:
on another note - are you getting charged to use agile? as of july they are begining to charge your mobile account directly for it's use (after you approve it of course). just curious as i am not (or at least can't see that i am).

I must confess that I haven't used it yet. I just thought it might be handy some day...
They started charging me today, after forcing me to download a new version.

ah HA! now we get to the REAL issue! 😉
install it and hit me with an IM with whatever IM service you use and i will walk you through it. i use it all day at work on the X docked to the keyboard. no issues at all.

does the "new" version work? if so, email the sis please.

and also... how did they notify you and what did the notification say/look like etc.
They notified me with a big "we're going to charge you" full screen thing. I had to pick monthly or one-off billing before being allowed to use the program.
I haven't tried charging yet - need to install it on another handset first 😉

I dare say, but I should explain that I have a mobile phone for emergency/occasional use only and spend 2-3/month on Pay As You Go! I was after something to replace my ageing Psion S5 and a Symbian smartphone seemed the obvious choice. The Sendo seemed like the best buy of that type. I use the music/PDA features far more than the phone/msg ones.
that being the case, you made a fine choice in handsets!

I guess you've seen this, but just in case... http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/forum//forum/thread/39664/

Yep. I think the question was more "how are they actually implementing it?"
Mordred 660 wrote:that being the case, you made a fine choice in handsets!
Once I found I could get one SIM-free inc keyboard for 150 it seemed the obvious choice. It was nice that Sendo is a UK firm too. Such a shame they are no more :frown:
I must say I find some of the limitations a bit surprising, tho, e.g. the calendar is very basic compared with the S5 Agenda.
there are a few third-party calendars out there that will do much better for you.

I thought there ought to be but have seen no mention of any until now, even on 3-Lib.
Some searching coming up!

Those are the very 2 I just found and decided to try!
