To upgrade or not upgrade?

I've been lurking on this forum for a while now waiting to see what sort of problems people experienced with the new firmware before taking the plunge myself. Overall, it seems the latest version has been given the thumbs up with the exception of the irda problems, which may or may not be firmware related (lots of people seem to keep dropping their phone 😊 )

However, my phone has a firmware version that I have not seen mentioned anywhere: 1.109.5.2, which I got around May/June time. Is there a way of downloading the current firmware before uploading a new one? If I don't get on with the new one and need to go back to an old one it seems I have to go back to 1.98.5.2, which is older than my current firmware. Does anybody know what the differences are between my current firmware and 98?

Everything seems to work okay with the phone, with the exception of Route66 (UK), which I have since discovered is not officially supported on the X by the makers anyway despite all the shops that sell it saying it is (but that's a story for another time). Has anybody tried Route66 on the new firmware, and is it any better? I have a nasty feeling that if the new firmware has gone even more far removed from the standard Series 60 that it may be even worse than it is now. (I frequently have to reboot the phone mid-journey, and sometimes even go so far as remove the battery to get it to start again... :icon13: )

Any comments appreciated.

1.109.5.2 was a firmware release done solely for Expansys and Expansys distribution phones. It had (from memory) one UK specific fix above the 1.98.5.2 firmware release. Having used both on the same phone, I can say that you don't notice the difference!

1.198.8.2 is *much* improved from the 60D firmwares (both 1.98.52 and 1.109.5.2 are 60D release firmwares) - I don't think you'll see anywhere as many problems using it.

As for Route 66, I know Kev uses it on his X, and I believe it works well for him. Although I haven't tried it myself, generally speaking I think that application compatibility is better with 1.198.8.2 than it is with the older firmwares.

The only thing to remember is to follow the instructions for this firmware release TO THE LETTER. Otherwise you won't be able to restore your data back to the phone.

My X from Expansys came with 1.109.5.2 installed. I installed the new Expansys version from SendoSmartPhones and it is better. As Stu says, just make sure you follow the instructions. To be safe, do a backup to both PC and SD card.
