6650 Software - how to gt it on the 7650...?

10 replies · 2,621 views · Started 10 November 2002

Hi there,

i have the chance to get some software from a 6650 demo unit, including a app called 'net monitor' - not field test display like i've read in a 3650 here.

my question now is - which files do i have to copy to the 7650...?
if i only copy the z:\system\apps\appname folder to the 7650 as c:\system\apps\appname it doesn't show up in menu...?

i guess there is some index-files i have to enter where it says which apps are installed / to be shown in the menu...?

Thanks for your help!

If I am not mistaken the 6650 does not use Symbian OS but Nokia OS, the apps probably wont work in the 7650. Except the J2ME ones!

though it has different menus than 7650, it looked quite like symbian.... moight only be the gui, shure... i'll try to find out more...

beside that... how can i get apps from one symbian to the other symbian phone using 'file by file copy'..?

IMHO it will not work

1st) if the program is made to be executed "in place" from ROM... you can't just "copy" the file and put it in storage memory

2nd) the phone is UMTS phone, so... I don't think that 'net monitor' from an UMTS phone would ever work on a GSM phone 😮

You just need to copy the application files, and then it will show up in menu: no need to "hack" any index file or similar

Instead... look in C:\ ... if there is any cool program in there 😉 these are most likely to run "ported" in another device. Remember to copy libraries from libs folder too 😉

and/or... look for .SIS files in C: and in Z: ... running these installers could help having working programs 😊

btw... I don't know what UI the phone has, I'm not sure it will have Series60UI... but just try to install a file manager like SeleQ on the phone and see if it works 😉

that's what i'm afraid of too...

it's a so called dual mode phone, i already used it on gsm and on umts networks, the question is, beside the one if it's series60, if the 'gsm-stack' is the same as in the 7650, hence will it run without the umts code....

those are still 'installers' ? because if i look at the sizes they are pretty small... :/

there's already a built in file-manager which can forward files via bluetooth,...
i'll be able to play around with this thingy on tuesday night again, thanks for your help, i'll let you know if anything is working!

btw, the video app also seems to be from hantro, at least it also has this nasty 100KB limit.... :/

ok, u where right, no Series 60 device... though it give a very similar look / feeling after playing around shortly for the 1st time...

sorry - no pics, my source had to sign some sort of NDA-like paper, don't wanna get anyone into troubles!

it's thinner than the 7650, if you slide out the 7650 keypad so you can see all the keys starting with row 4-6 you have approx. the same size.
screen is the same, a little higher than in 7650 - the keypad wouldn't fit on it below otherwise.
there is a left and right softkey like the 7650 has,
between them is a very strange thing which hopefully gets fixed by nokia, this thingy is crap:
the function is the same like the joystick - 4 directions and a center position, but it is only one button where you have to press on the corners of it. point is: wenn trying to press is in center-position you end up pressing it in any other position than center position most times... VERY BAD!
and - but this might be due to dev-status - the left softkey isn't used most times, instead they use the 'joystick's' -up- function for this, the text on the screen is also in the middle instead of the left side... right softkey is used as usual...

video app only allows 100K mp4 videos, no audio 😞

coll thing is about using this or any other umts phone (well, test units looking like the old erricson 537, 688, t10,.. type phones) connected to a notebook on a umts network right now - as they are not in production there are maybe 10 other users in the entire network - means you are alone in the range of one antenna, not sharing any bandwith/resources with other users... aka more than 300kb/s over the air... and that rocks! (yes, the other thing that rocks is that it's free as in development stage... wondering how i can stop my addiction to it when they go on production and bill you until you have to sleep under some bridges... 😉

if there are more questions - i should be able to get my hands on the 6650 unit again in a week...

i have no idea.... imho they have just put the hantro app into it to have something to play around... as the phone is very unstable, crashes on soo many occassions, it's way to early to say anything about the final version that get's on the market... those 6650 demo units are basically there to test the umts-stack for this phone... the rest of it seems to be nothing to care about now.....
that was also my idea when i saw it - thought they have a series 60 phone with the umts stack integrated for testing umts & S60...,dunno how compatible such firmware parts ar with differnt phone-os's...
can u post some detailed pictures bout the actual phone
check the link: "Fotogalerie: Nokia 6650" in the middle to see a slideshow with detailed live-pics...

I think it wont be a good idea to buy directly the first UMTS-device.
f.e. an email-client is missing at the 6650!
just wait - there will definately be some better ones soon - maybe an UMTS-7650 😃
