6 replies · 4,000 views · Started 21 August 2005

Hi guys, new here so sorry if i'm covering old ground, did have a search but no joy.

I've got a 6630 and have recently got TomTom.

But For some reason all i get when i start it up is the following message:

'GPS Signal Was lost 'x' sec ago'

basically a count going up in place of the 'x' in M:SS (minutes:seconds) !!??

any ideas on what mite be the problem ?

Thanks in advance.

Ps. the GPS reciever i am using is:

QSTARZ GRB-248 GPS BLUETOOTH RECEIVER

The one commonly sold on ebay - i beleive it's the Nemerix one.

Hope somebody can help.

have you paired the phone and GPS unit?

Have you changed the GPS unit in Tomtom to 'other'?

SORRY ignore that

You have got a connection OK as if you hadnt it would say 'No GPS device!' just tried it.

you need to take the GPS unit outside with a clear view of the sky and then look in the GPS status screen. Press the left selection key (above the 1) and then 5 6 6 6 1.

that would mean that the gps receiver has not got a locked signel on the satellites
but is comunicating ok with the phone

you can go onto a screen in tomtom called "show gps status" on that screen you will see up to 11 bars, if they are all empty you are not seeing the sats, you will need at least 3 blue to get a position, any grey bars are satalites but not locked yet
new receivers can take about 30 to 40 minites to get a signal first time

hope this helps

Aha, thanks guys !! Working now. Didn't actually receive any instructions with the Receiver so didn't realise that u have to wait for the red light to start flashing on the receiver before it means that its locked onto a satelite. 😉

I do find that the signal does cut out from time to time tho, is this normal ? and is there anyway to boost the receivers capability of receiving a better signal ? I notice there is wot looks like a little port on the side of the receiver where an antenna/aerial can be plugged in. Is this correct ?

Cheers again.

That's got to do with your reciver if it's got an external antenna conection. I got myself a new GPS with the latest chipset. I can recive signals inside my apartmant. I was realy amazed when I first got it. It never loses GPS-signal when outside (only when going thru tunels longer than 50m)..

This is the one (by the way, I charged it a month ago.. still working 😃 )

I had the earler model to the 338, the 308 and that worked fine. Any gps unit should work if it obeys the correct protocols.
