What is "@" symbol?

Hopefully a silly question, but my wife's 7610 has a small "@" symbol displayed below the power bar on the main screen, which moves to the very top right of the screen when you enter any other area.

I thought it might hane something to do with email but this isn't set up as my wife is a very basic user of the phone.

This symbol normally means that there is an unread email in the mailbox.

Thanks for your response badger. That was my thought too but since there is no mailbox defined I don't know how to get rid of it. The only thing she ever uses is an occasional MMS to me. Certainly no email. Any ideas how I can get rid of it in this case?... Thanks again.
