Nokia 6680 & TomTom Mobile 5

Hi there,
I've read all threads relating to TomTom Mobile 5 and getting it to work correctly with the Nokia 6680. I've purchased the product and have the ceramic tomtom receiver 😊 . I have successfully paired the devices and planned journey's etc but believe I've come across a bug with the Symbian Software.

Intermittently :icon4: , when I try to launch the TomTom application from the phones GUI, it seems to get half way through then fails, returns me to the main menu of the phone without any error messages. I've checked there are no other applications open/running in the background.

I've also tried hard-resetting the phone back to factory spec, formatting my 512mb memory card and starting from scratch but still the same intermittent problem - the only fix it seems is to reboot the phone (which isn't good enough 😡 )

If it's any consolation or will help in finding a fix for this problem - I regularly turn bluetooth on and off depending on whether I need another device (to save battery power :icon14: ) and almost everytime I turn bluetooth off using a pre-recorded voice prompt - it reboots the phone...

any help appreciated. 😃

the 6680 doesn't always have quite enough memory to launch Tomtom, especially if other apps have been opened (even if they are closed). The only thing I found to do was to make sure any self-installled apps were on the memory card and not on the phone, that any messages are on the memory card and not on the phone and to reboot the phone if Tomtom won't start up.

Cheers,
Jez

No, no, no. 8-)

'Memory' here isn't the issue. There's plenty of flash memory. (Well, enough, anyway). And it's not a bug in TomTom MOBILE 5.

The problem is RAM, what Nokia sometimes call 'execution memory', if they refer to it at all. TTM5 needs about 6MB. On a 6630 or 6680, this usually means closing down Contacts and Messaging, plus obvious memory hogs like Imaging, RealPlayer and any games. You can see what's running at any point by pressing and holding the Menu/Apps key.

Hope all this helps. Maybe it should be a FAQ!

Oh yes, and you can also reclaim extra RAM from closed apps using FExplorer's 'Reclaim memory' command. And other system tools, no doubt.

In practice, after a little housekeeping, I've always been able to start TTM5 successfully without having to reboot the device.

OK - yes understand what both of you are saying - thanks. The only other apps I have installed on the phone are FEExplorer, Autolock, the London Underground Java App (which generally has the same trouble as explained) and some Antivirus software and can confirm that none of them are running in the background apart from the phone which you can't unload from memory obviously :icon14: .

I have compressed the memory using FEExplorer and am currently using 6632k; further to this the stats on the phone follow 😎 :

C:\ (3972/8380 KB) <flash>
D:\ (1873/1883KB) <ram>
E:\ (31/484 MB 😎 ) <disk>
Z:\ (0/0 KB) <rom>

I'm pointing audio and video at the MMC card to avoid storing anything on the phone itself. Can anyone let me know if there's a firmware upgrade or if Symbian are working to improve the way it's OS uses memory :icon2: ?

Do you mean you have 6632k *free*?

This should be enough to run TTM5.

Steve

Are you using a legal version of TomTom 5 especially complied for the 6630/6680??

*I have TT5 running fine on my 6680 😉

Drop TomTom a email and I am sure they will support you getting it running on your 6680, you did after all pay good money for the application!

Yes, but isn't the phone memory shared between storing apps and data and running them? So lowering the amount of data or apps stored in phone memory should free up memory for running the applications, or have I got the wrong end of the stick?

No. This isn't a Psion, EPOC has moved on 8-)

RAM is RAM and not often talked about by Nokia. But it's the critical figure here.

'Memory' is internal flash memory, split between a protected ('ROM'😉 area and user ( C: ) storage.

When Nokia talk about memory, they sometimes mean RAM and sometimes mean flash memory. Confused? Write to Nokia. Seriously. They need to know that their current terminology needs clearing up.

So in other words, Nokia don't know the difference between storage and RAM? A bit worrying for a company their size.

I still find that rebooting the phone to clear out any memory which has not been released back to the system by other applications is the best course of action, as after a few apps have been opened and closed, there doesn't seem to be enough free RAM.
