Anyone using Opera 8.0?

10 replies · 2,469 views · Started 30 August 2005

I am just wondering if people who are using it are happy with the experience. Personally I used it for a few days but I went back to Opera 6.20 totally frustrated.
I complained on the Opera forum and indeed there were other people who weren't happy either.
The reaction from the Opera team has been very disappointing. They have not admitted that this release is flawed and they have refused to commit to any dates to provide corrections. As a result of my criticism I was banned by the Opera forum.
This experience has changed my perception of Opera as a whole company and I will not buy anything from Opera again in the future.

Anyway to stick to the point, I found several problems that made this browser unusable:

1) certain links cannot be selected when navigating pages; ironically this happens also when using forums in the Opera website!

2) most menus don't work correctly; this problem occurs on various sites that use javascript menus, one example: www.hattrick.org.

3) Opera has redesigned how the browser deals with forms. This choice has created a number of problems around text input fields:
-- text cannot be selected in any way as the pencil key doesn't work within Opera now. Imagine using web based email, you reply to a message of 30 lines and you need to delete most of the quote: impossible!
-- keeping the "c" key pressed doesn't delete multiple characters; (sorry those 30 lines of quote in your reply must really stay!)
-- T9 input is not working correctly in situations when you delete a character and want to change the word you are writing

4) Opera has introduced 4-way navigation in the browser; this means that links are selected automatically while moving around the page; this choice has slowed scrolling so much that I would call it crawling.

Based on these and other findings I dared call the browser "unusable" and I probably touched some sensitive areas of the Opera personnel.

Ok, here is my point of view. What is yours? Are you happy with the new Opera release? Are you using it at all?

I know exactly what your saying but it is a lot better then the last version :icon14:

Can you elaborate a bit please? Let's say you use Opera to access Hattrick www.hattrick.org .... with 6.20 you can, with 8.0 basically you can't. How can this be better?

i dont go on that site so it dont bother me,but when i go to www.nokiapower.com and i go to the forum you cant select one thing it selects everything which is shit :icon13:
but it is very quick 😉

I also noticed the same issues (espec #3 and #4 in the first post) but I agree that it does appear to be faster now at least.

In additon to the T9 issue mentioned above if I want to select a number by pressing and holding down the respective key, I can only do this once. To select another number I have to move the cursor first. This now occurs in any application using T9 text input and is not just isolated to Opera.

i couldnt have said it better! I dont like opera 8.0 and i faced exactly the same issues. the rendering isn't as good as 6.2 i must say.

Lets hope they do fix it.

I cannot believe the behaviour of this company. Today three of my posts have been deleted from the Opera forum just because I stated the plain fact that it's been two months since people started complaining about the problems with Opera 8.0 and so far no solution is available and they have not even committed to a date for a solution.
They will just delete any post in their forum if you complain about their products. I urge you to visit the Opera S60 forum on their site and check what I am saying: today a guy wrote about a problem that crashes the browser; they haven't even replied but if you complain then your posts will be deleted. All this for a software priced at 29 euro!

I must strongly object to Utenteanonimo64's misleading, nay, completely false and preposterous lies about Opera.

As a long time Opera fan and Nokia user, I am appalled to see these lies being propagated on the net.

Utenteanonimo64 may be telling the truth when he says that he was banned and his posts removed.

But he is not telling the whole story.

The fact is that Utenteanonimo64 has for a long time been harassing the Opera forums by flooding it with off-topic, derogatory comments about individuals and companies. He has been spreading lies and hijacking other people's threads with nothing bot flaming and abuse.

He was apparently warned repeatedly by the moderators before he was finally banned!

There are plenty of posts and threads criticizing Opera in their forums, and they are not being removed. The reason why Utenteanonimo64's posts are being removed is that they are insulting, off-topic, and repeated over and over and over again.

Before you pass judgement based on hearsay in a forum posted by an individual who has a history of abusing others, you will hopefully take the time to see the other side of the story from someone who witnessed his abusive behavior first hand.

I have asked people to go and look for themselves. That can't be wrong. You define yourself a "fan"; I define myself a customer of Opera. So obviously we have a different attitude.

I have posted 123 times in this forum (you Sigup joined yesterday.... how strange!) and I don't think there is any abuse or offense in any of my posts. Obviously asking for solutions to problems and not getting any reasonable reply from Opera has generated a lot of frustration in my posts in the Opera forum. Still I believe I am telling the truth when I say that they have spent more time removing my posts rather than providing any support to troubled customers.

It is not strange that I joined yesterday. I saw your comments in the Opera forum, and decided to have a look.

And what do you know! You are misrepresenting what happened.

You can try to talk your way out of it, but the fact remains: You flooded the forum with abusive off-topic posts, and eventually they started removing your posts that completely destroyed the forum for other users, and you were only banned after several warnings.
