After my own critical comments about F-Secure's media barrage (e.g. here), Symbian have responded officially in an interview with Silicon.com. Bottom line: don't be worried, don't panic and there's really no need for anti-virus software.
Symbian responds to virus hype
I understand that the threat of infection in the wild in almost non-existant if not non-existant.
Why, then is F-Secure's Anti-Virus ware Symbian Signed?
I love the little quote about "anyone with a certain amount of common sense" can avoid getting their phone infected. You would certainly need a definate absence with today's user installed viruses...

Well, they're obviously making enough money from people to be able to afford the SS program 8-)
In an ideal world, once warned of the possibility of malware, users would be wary of unwanted connections and applications; they don't need detailed tech knowledge to avoid these - just saying 'No' (or leaving the proximity of the user spreading the malware) is perfectly good enough.
Ironically, the very media campaign which F-Secure have initiated might spread awareness that will deter people from accepting connections and apps, thus reducing infection rates and reducing the perceived call for their own product. 8-)
