Russ losing the faith?

I'm with him 100% about Symbian being a bugger to develop for (my words, not his)....

However, there is already a linux smartphone out there at the moment (the e28 - available on expansys). However, it is very expensive and whilst it may be easier to write for, there are far fewer apps available for it than there are for Symbian. It's the same problem new Mac users have - far friendlier to use than Windows but far harder to find apps in the high street for (I've never even seen a Linux program in PC world).

"...in general dealing with Microsoft is dealing with the devil (as Sendos demise has shown us)"

Who could ever argue against that sentiment?

Aren't all the Linux smartphones available on the market today locked down, with Java MIDP as the only means of adding software?

Yes Raven you're right. In theory you could have a Linux smartphone (and I don't doubt it will happen), but nothing mainstream yet.

I don't agree with what Russ said (read my comment in his feedback), but yes developer stuff could be better.

In theory I like Linux as I like the concept of Open Source software. Indeed I keep trying it out on my PC but it is still not user friendly enough for me to recommend it as a desktop replacement to anyone who does not have a good technical knowledge. For example downloading and installing softare is still often problomatic. I think Linux is a very good server product and is probably ideal as a desktop replacement for an organisation who has its own technical support and does not require more than the basic Office and Internet requirements. The thing is if they have not manged to get it user friendly enough for Joe public on a PC after years of trying what chance do they have of getting it right on a small protable device like a mobile phone? I suspect this is why the current Linux phones have limited functionality.

i dont get it!! didnt sendo die under symbian???

still very perplexed at this Evil Redmond ethos going round over the years. a purely independent view on the whole issue would be appreciated.

Sendo were hampered in the smartphone world by having to make up time after being shafted by Microsoft in the first place.
