Hi all,
I've been using a 7650 since like the day after they came out in England, and have been amazingly happy with it. The range of software that is being produced is quite varied, and quite useful. But I believe that users are the best people to come up with program ideas, and not enough companies take soundings from the "man on the street". So, here's my proposal...
I have been coding for a few years now, and have written a number of Windows programs to do a variety of tasks. I have experimented with programming Symbian OS apps, and have had reasonable success. I would like people to use this post to give developers ideas for programs, and to request help with programs they are working on, and tell other people what features they would like to see in programs. An example of a program that could have benefited from something like this would be the brilliant (well, when it works! 😃 ) Bemused. This program requires interaction between the program running on the phone, and a server program running on the PC. Had Ashley not known both Symbian and Windows coding, he would not have been able to make this program. I think this post could provide a meeting place for people with program ideas who require help with some aspect of their program. For example, I would like to offer my help to anyone having trouble coding the PC section of their Symbian app.
Users would be able to sound out ideas and get feedback from other forum users, as well as requesting help from other coders. This would mean many programs would have features that usually wouldn't be available until version 2 at least, as users have had time to give suggestions for features.
I'll give an example of a program that could be useful, and that I would require some interaction on...
(PS - If some parts of this don't make sense, please let me know and I'll rephrase it. Surviving on 3 hours sleep and 21 hours computing a day isn't good for the vocabulary...)
Yeah i have an idea.
In fact i have alot, i'm just too lazy to think
Many people have the OS version 3.12, (including me, thats why im posting) and still not everybody had upgraded. You see,you could make a little simple app, to take control of the really soft loudspeaker, and also make an app that could give you a warning and keep your free memory more than 200 kb (for safety) and halt you from downloading more or filling that up, so you don't have to risk losing all your data just because you didn't pay attention to the bug that freezes the phone when you go less than 160-100 kb
Im sure alotta people will come up with alotta innovating ideas, you just wait and see!
To start off the thread, here's a prog idea I had a little while ago. Someone mentioned it in another post, another thread....
This program would be an edited version of the video recording application, with one major difference. The video would be buffered as a normal video file would be, but when it gets to 100KB (for example) that 100KB would be sent via bluetooth to a waiting PC, and then stored on the PC's hard drive. When each segment is complete, it will be combined with the rest of the video to form one complete file. Using this method, video size would be completely unlimited (well, limited only by battery life of phone and hard drive of PC) as well as allowing decent-quality sound recording.
If someone could come up with the Symbian code to record videos, and then send the data in binary format via Bluetooth, I would be able to code all of the server-side elements. If anyone is interested in this idea, please let me know. It would be great to get in contact with someone who can code Symbian-ware!
If you can't code, but have comments or suggestions, please feel free to share them - ask Linus... the more people working on a problem, the better the solution.
Spikey

Symbian c++
The modification of the video app was long discussed but we have'nt seen more modification than the PVDK author, but there are annoying cons still with that version; The missing ability to send files directly to the PC, (we still have to use some sort of a file manager app), and the unability of viewing files, (we have to use Hantro video app)
If you could make a video app (or modify) to pick quality levels,(FPS) and pick how many KB to the video size till it stops, and maybe even add sound, it will be a killer app. (and ofcourse fix the formerly mentioned cons)
OH!, Can you make games?!?, MUFFY V's JIZZO!!
Honest you would sell millions of copys and you could retire in a big mansion on your own island somewhere.
Well maybe not, but if you fancy the challenge let me know and I'll give you more details.
From now on everyone has to vote for the Muffy V's JIZZO game or I'll delete your posts
...lol....Only joking.
Okay how about......
* A plugin for the PC Suite that reads your SMS files from the c: drive on the phone. (Backup/Export etc....), bit like Handy Safe.
* A plugin that allows you to browse the phones file structure. Whats really odd about the OS is previous Psion OSs had a browse function which worked from the PC.
* A database, with popup boxes, checkboxes, expressions etc.....
* Journal Application? Recording voice or notes, direct into the calendar or standalone on the phone?
* A port of Vexxed!
Chrs. 😊
this isnt a very ambitious idea but nevertheless :P
how about being able to display the current date instead of Meeting or Silent in the bar below the operator logo, just as it does when u put it into the General profile as well as being able to alter the format of the date 😃
OK, I know that nobody else would use it, but can you make a telnet client app for 7650?
P.S. If you can reverse engineer apps for 7650, I have a great challenge for you: NetMonitor & Video Capture utility from 3650... Can you handle the challenge? 😉
Im still waiting for a nice little proggy which can convert jpg's taken by 7650 to the I-Mode standard. (for the phone offcourse)
I have a couple of friends who has that shitty i-mode thingy....
And i want more 'theme' colors, instead of the blue, purple, green.
Also the backround... more colors instead of only white. Font colors must be changeble too.
The ability to forward mail/sms/ir/etc i got on my phone..
videophone conference would be nice too.
All this I asking Santa Claus...but i have more hope with the developers...
Video conference with the 7650 and with data transmitions over todays network would be rubbish
I used to be a Technician for a company called polyspan that produced "set top" boxes the minimum data speed you would need would be dual ISDN (128k) for quality video, it is "viewable" over 56k but not very good, obviously a smaller screen needs less data transmission, but it wouldn't be veiwable over a 9.6kb connection as you wouldn't have a buffer time whilst having a conversation with someone. It has to be fast enough for "Real Time".
/me/ waits for 3G 😃
Present Network for video conf is impossible, becoz what we have now is just 2.5G. Wait till the full 3G technology implement and i believe Video Conf will be made possible.
I still love the concept phone from Nokia.... i wonder will they really produce em'
How about a bluetooth instant messenger?
Some aplication that allow you to messeng for free through bluetooth.
Here in Portugal it's becoming very popular the use of BT in disco's. All we do is search for BT's and then a list of girls appear!! :P
It would be nice if we could sent simple messages, instead of notes or business cards.
And an alert for when you found a new BT phone. Of course that our phone should scan new BT's from time to time, let's say 5 min customisable...
something like that.
Got the idea?
blue: I like the idea for the plug-in for PC Suite. I've not got PC Suite working on my WinXP box yet, so I haven't actually used it properly! I know the 6110 version of PC Suite had this feature, so it's not very good if Nokia have forgotten about it!
You ask for a program to browse the phone's file structure... you could try looking in the software section, where you should be able to download SeleQ, which is a pretty good trialware file browser.
You also ask for a program to record voice or text notes... have you tried opeing Recorder and Notes? It won't record directly to the calendar, but it will save voice and text.
Sigmacom: I've got a program called <a href="http://www.mutelnet.com">MUTelnet</a> that you may find useful. It's extremely tempermental, but it will work from time to time! Hey, it means I can completely control Unix servers from my phone... it's good enough for me!
Lightbulb: That sounds like more of a wish-list item for the new version of the Symbian OS, not a new program!
Thegrey: Forwarding.... go to the software section and search for "Forward". This brilliant program will forward any files in your Inbox (attachments, BT files, IR Files etc) via BT,IR or email. And like the man Jizzo says... video conferencing isn't happening for a while yet.
Alexandr3: Now that's the kind of idea I like... it's incredibly useful, it allows you to interact with people, and there's a chance of finding a funky portuguese chick! Unfortunately this is beyond my Symbian c++ skills at present, so it's down to someone else to implement. That will be a killer app for BT... the amount of people who realise that BT is an amazing technology will jump exponentially after the release of a program that allows instant messaging between unconnected users.
Most of these ideas are pretty good, but there doesn't seem to be any contribution from developers. Can some coders get in on this thread? We need to know what you think on the feasibility and implementation issues of any future product ideas!
good ideas all over, one i'm missing: the ability to change the size of the font - no matter if in address book oder in message application...
a thought about videoconferencing... *lol* ever tried to imagine that...? you have to hold the phone in front of you so the cam can capture you, while, at the same time look on the display on the other side of the phone...? yes, the construction of the phone is not useable for videoconferencing...
except someone develops a thing you mount on the phone consisting of 2 mirrors which either mirror the cam or the display so it can be seen/see you on the other side...
and not to stop your motivation / ideas, i guess most of the ideas will need some changes of the os itself... so those won't be possible at all for non-nokia-devs....? am i totally wrong with that? maybe some dev more familiar with writing symbian apps can write down a short summary - which things are possible - where is the border between user programs and kernel-side programs...?
The best chance of coders reading this is if I put it in the symbian C++ thread!
Away with you!
isn't this the 'symbian c++' thread...? where is the real c++ thread then anyway...?
isn't this the 'symbian c++' thread...? where is the real c++ thread then anyway...?
Who said anything about "real" C++?
with real c++ i was thinking about a forum where the devs really discuss internal stuff of developing anything for 7650, shure i also meant symbian-c++, not something-c++, i'm just to lazy to type while doing some phone calls at the same time 😉
the question should have been like - where if not here (symbian c++ thread) is the real symbian c++ thread you mentioned...
Read my post again, I'll think you'll find that I mentioned nothing of the sort!
*Moderator Magic*
lol 😉
Has anyone thought of making a skinning program for nokia 7650. Through which themes and skins could be placed instead of that boaring nokia theme. I believe that such a program would really work well. I've e-mailed wincustomize for my idea but they did not reply. I hope someone could come up with something soon.
:fadein:
Here's an idea for something that must be possible, I use my phone for both work and personal calls. I get fed up when I am not working having to divert all calls to voice. So how about an application that detects the CALLER ID, checks the allowed, deny list and then either rings or redirects to Voice Mail.
When you get a call you can Silence it and then reject it, which on mine sends it voicemail. Would be nice to do that automatically and tie it in with the Conacts function, so you could just pick who you wanted to talk to. Maybe set up some groups ie: Family, Friends, Work, Clients etc....
If an OPL SDK existed I could probably knock one up pretty quick, but my Java/C++ is really basic.
That is a great idea. I would buy that.
I hope someone will make this.
It was nice if anyone could programm a application to control our Computer Mouse over BT with the 7650
i would like to get a tool, witch the 7650 can be timeset switch off.
(Save the powerbutton)
somebody would like to try this out?

But... the only reason I turn my phone off is when some program crashes... 😊
Just a simple and easy(?) program suggestion.
Make a program that disconnects everything quickly (mainly for GPRS connections).
This is for the situations like when I'm using 7650 to browse the internet and then I would want to check my mail, it won't use the existing connection and tries to connect again and doesn't succeed. I have to go and connect tto normal GPRS, disconnect and then connect to the mail server.
Simple thing explained as complicated as possible 😊 try to understand 😊
can you give me a website for upgrading like video, camera fx. thank you very much.
make a nintendo 64 emulator for symbian os and uiq. everybody gana buy that program
I am a Symbian developer myself and liked the ideas very much especially
the caller id and bt messenger ideas.
really cool.
Bye.
