Hi,
I had my 9500 flashed with the latest firmware 5.22. Ever since I have received it back from Nokia I have found the phone to lag a lot switching between applications or even trying to make notes or calender entries.
I spoke to Nokia and they say that because I made a backup of my data via the file manager and memory card backup utility, so restoring it has caused my old data to cause internal conflicts with the new software.
I asked them how else I can backup my data and keep all my notes since I know I can manually backup just my messages/contact/calender, their answer....write them down and retype them in. I have about 50 notes in different folders, their answer.....sorry there's no other way.
Is anyone else experiencing the same problem?
Thanks
Ari
When I had the firmware on mine upgraded, I also used the backup to memory card,
Restored the backup after the upgrade and have not had a problem,
Must have been something on your phone before the upgrade that is causing the problem?

There's something not quite right with the Desk folders in 5.22. If they're left open (as is naturally the case), the slow down the switching to Desk and then onto other apps significantly (four to five second delays).
Until this is fixed, it's best to put most shortcuts in the main Desk group, as it's very fast with no folders open. If you do have any open, go into them and use 'Exit', etc.

Thanks I'll keep that in mind when working on the desk notes. It's so frustrating though. The phone also decides to freeze when ever it feels like it and just reboot 😞

Ah. Well, that shouldn't happen. You must have *something* in the \system folder that it doesn't like. Slow or not, my 5.22 9500 is very, very stable.

Think it's about time I upgraded from 4.44

I agree. Nonetheless, I can crash my 5.22 9500 on command, any time, anywhere.
And forget about any of the tricks (Ctrl-Shift-Chr-K, cycle phone power, etc.), this sucker is dead. Only pulling the battery will bring it back.
5.22 is better, and it still has a way to go.
Now I recall sitting at watching everyone scramble for firmware upgrades on the 9210 while I sat and did nothing suffering no problems. Seeing as my 9500 so far has been rock solid running firmware 4.44 I really don't think I'll go through the hastle of trying to break it.
Interesting to hear your comments.
I thought it was just my phone, now waiting for a replacement, but since getting it back from Nokia who did the upgrade, it is definitely slower in lots of places. Even when you simply press the red phone button to end a call, it is noticeably slower to end the call and for the number to disappear from the screen.

"Dont fix something that aint broken" is a sound strategy, but alas some applications seem to require firmware 5+ in order to function. Like Nokias new push-mail client for instance.
Pesonally I am tempted to upgrade my own 4.51 in order to see if the media-player has been improved...
I needed the Blackberry, hence the upgrade. It now just happens to be that it's cheaper to use the standard GPRS and the Automail program than sign up for a Blackberry account.
Oh well will just have to wait for the next software version to come out *sigh*
Ah I am really interested to know whether the restore after the upgrades causes the 9500 to break? I face problems with my bluetooth headset after the upgrade. It happens time and time again when there too many apps are open, that the bluetooth performance is affected. In my case, the other party can barely hear me and sometimes even on my end the volume of the other party is noticably softer. When I start closing of the open apps, there is an increase in vol.

Also interesting to read these comments. I was about to upgrade to v5.22 but since I don't need Blackberry fuctionality and this version appears to introduce more and new problems, I shall stick with v4.
I went to 5.22 and have seen 2 problems so far:
In sheet it will no longer take font format changes to different colours - it just won't accept some colours and the date format goes back to a 5digit number when I try to change the colours
I have Powerdesk installed and that app now comes up when I use the "desk" key Powerdesk comes up instead and haven't figured out how to disable it - worked fine before. Also Powerdesk (always slow) seems a lot more sticky than before. Will try a re-install next.
1st time I have seen a firmware upgrade from Nokia that isn't a step in the right direction.
PC suite syncronisation of contacts and calendar is still a bag of s--t though!

Powerdesk in my case crashes intermittently. I have tried installing the communicator from scratch, no change. What irks me is that my bluetooth headset is now unreliable. Occasionally people complain they cannot hear me. I have to close some apps and on another occasion reclaim memory.

OK, so the problem's not the 5.22 firmware per se. My Desk is now running at the speed of light.
What did I do? Simply synced PIM data and made copies of user documents, then reformatted the internal disk and then copied docs and PIM stuff back. In other words, I got rid of a year's worth of legacy system and temporary and .ini files and the like. And everything's now very snappy indeed.
The problem's either restoring a 4.x backup to a 5.22 machine or simply that the OS gets slower as it accrues and unwanted files and needs a good clear out every now and then. I'm torn between the two possibilities. Any ideas? Certainly I never noticed a speed problem on 4.x, but all of a sudden it seemed to hit me when I started using 5.22. So maybe the first.
Anyway, a good reformat is the solution and I'm now a very happy bunny again!!

I did not reformat but did a hard reset instead. Not sure whether there is a difference but it did not change the problems that I was facing.

You know, it's a funny thing.
I have had a number of handheld devices over the past 10 years or so. I have joind user forums whe they become availble and there is a pattern to upgrading, just about.
There is a good chance that upgrading to a newer firmware, whether done at a service centre (like Nokia), or on a download (with HTC devices like XDA II / IIs), the end result will not be as good as getting the device with the newer firmware already installed.
I don't say that everyone will have a problem, or even the majority, but a few will end up with a right dog's breakfast.
Now it could be that there is a subtle hardware difference, that causes some upgrades to keel over, but if there is, no one has found it.
Dealing with some HTC machines, it does seem that leaving it well alone is the best plan and if you want the latest OS, buy a newer PDA. Now there's a good sales ploy - I wonder nobody's ever thought of this before 😉.
A point in case is to pop over to XDA-Developers and see what happens when you try to put Windows Mobile V5 on a 'Blue Angel'.
Now I don't want to come over smug or anything. I recently bought a 9500 after a crate full of problems with Window based smart phones. This is far more stable and works at leat as a phone all the time, which I couldn't guarantee before, and I am happy that the firmware is 4.51. I am not looking to change it.
Well this is a lot longer than I intended, but I thought - just my two pen'orth. 😊

Do you mean you did a hard reset and then immediately it was very slow? I find that hard to believe. Or do you mean you then restored your backup? That'll do it, because it'll put back all the old problem system files....

Actually, your wording just sunk in. What do you mean by 'hard reset'? On a 9500, a hard reset IS the same as reformatting the internal disk, i.e. starting the \system folder from scratch.

Yup...Hard reset means reformatting the internal disk.
Okay so i'm willing to try reformat my 9500.
I know how to just backup the contacts/calender/messages via the content copier, but how does one select the desk notes and folders I've created? Even if I have to manually back it up.
Tnx
Ari
After a little investigation, it seems all your Desk notes are stored in \system\apps\note\ , so copying these files somewhere safe should suffice. But I tried moving one of these files out of the folder and then in again and its Note in Desk didn't reappear, even though the file was back, so there's obviously an index file of some kind that needs keeping in step.
Anyone able to progress this any further? Ideas?

Hi Steve,
I also tried as a test and found the same problem. Today I had to reset my phone 8 times because it kept freezing and the handsfree didn't operate when I opened the phone.
