Dropped, now no reception. How to fix?

5 replies · 3,348 views · Started 28 September 2005

After I dropped my Sendo X phone I no longer get reception.

Question 1) I know Sendo are in administration but are there any independent firms that can fix the phones? My 'phone is the sim-free international version and was bought through eXpansys - not as part of a mobile 'phone operator airtime package.

Question 2) Anywhere I can get spare parts?

Question 3) Dropping could be pretty catastrophic but there's a small chance it might be remedied by a simple step. For example, something dislodged. Could there be such a remedy? I'm not optimistic on this one but if you don't ask...

Question 4) I've dismantled the 'phone and cannot see any visible damage or disconnections. The aerial subsystem seems to be encased in a flat tin-like box on the mainboard. I don't know how this could be repaired. Any ideas?

Question 5) Is there any sort of reset I could do to the 'phone? Again don't hold out much hope.

Either I get it repaired/replaced or get a Nokia 3250 which has a microSD card slot - so that I can continue my thebug.com/DAB/MP2 player project on this using a microSD to full size SD adapter.

perhaps, but i would not expect them to do it under any warranty

yes - www.sendosmartphones.com

look for the disassembly guide on www.sendosmartphones.com there is a schematic of the phone located there

hold down the "5" key and press and hold the power button for a count of three. release the power button while still holding the "5" key until the format screen appears. if you do not know what i am talking about, do a search in this forum for "format"

your choice

What damage occured to the exterior of the phone? Which part of the phone took the brunt of the impact?

It may be possible to repair your phone, so long as nothing on the circuit board is broken. If it's just an aerial connector problem (which it does sound like) then it can be fixed quite easily - the main thing to look out for is the connectors between the aerial unit and the circuit board - if they don't connect in the right spot, then you'll get what you describe.

As said above, http://www.sendosmartphones.com has some spare parts - we might even be able to lay our hands on a spare aerial (the phone part, not the circuitry). Send me an email at [email protected] for more options.

Finally, where do you live?

Thanks for your replies - I am also looking at an independent mobile phone repair company that my home insurance suggested.

Mordred 660 - thanks for your reply.
stuclark - thanks for your reply.

I have responded to both of you below.

Mordred 660: hold down the "5" key

I have tried that but this did not fix my reception problem. Thanks anyway for suggesting.

That could be useful. I hope it will confirm where I think the aerial subsystem is. I will look it up.

It was in a transparent case - and it fell on its side and its back from a drop of about 60cm from office carpetted floor.

I had the 'phone right down before my posting on this board. There are 2 flexi cables connecting to the board. One appears to be for the keyboard (large) and the other appears to be for the camera unit. I have unplugged and plugged both in. Maybe dust might be a problem. I'll check that also and blow it away with my aerosol PCB dust spray. As I say the aerial subsystem is contained in a tin-like box package. Don't know what else to do myself. The tightness and positioning of the flexi cables would prevent them from being connected the wrong way around I think.

Question 6 (new)) What is meant by the 'phone part? As far as I can see the aerial is all self contained on the board. There doesn't seem to be an aerial going from the motherboard but I might be mistaken.

I live in the Southampton area.

The aerial itself is a piece of flat aluminium which is sandwiched between the chasis and the outer case of the X. it fits around where the camera module pokes through the casing. You can't normally see it.

What you should be able to see is two springy connectors on the back of the phone chasis - these connect to the back of the circuit board, to the left hand side of the camera unit a you look at it out of the phone. I suspect it is these connections which aren't working properly. (I have experienced what happens if these get dislodged or broken personally)

If you don't have any luck sorting this yourself - I live in London... maybe we could meet up to have a look at it, or you could send the phone up to me to see if I can fix it.
