[Quite OT] 70% off Slovoed dictionnaries

Hi,

I've received an email from epocware giving me a code for a 70% discount until the 15th of october on any of their slovoed language dictionaries so i though i might as well share it here. Go to http://siemens-sx1-software.epocware.com/SlovoEd.html, choose any dictionary and use the code SLOVOEDS60NEW on the shopping page to get the discount. Full email at the end of this post for those who want all the details. The Sendo X is not listed on their site but choose Siemens SX1 or Nokia 3650 and it'll work just fine.

For those who had tried the first version of slovoed on their X and uninstalled it right away bevause of all the display bugs, try the new version 2. It now looks really nice and usable if you keep the default settings (there are still display bugs if you want to change the font size or the background color though but it's not a big deal).

For those who don't know the Slovoed range, these are langage dictionaries that can be used with the free Slovoed dictionnary reader application (supplied with every dictionnary you buy). There are loads of languages available and for each languages you have the choice between different version of the dictionary varying in size and price.

I've tried the English <-> French and the German <-> French dictionaries and found them really well done. The application itself is surprisingly fast to launch given the size of the dictionaries, the translation appears almost immedialtely whenever you select a word and the application uses only 400KB of RAM so it can be left running in the background. They seem to have roughly as many words as mini dictionaries and i've found everything from technical computer words to weird exotic insults. They also have a lot of expressions and sayings and there is a wildcard search mode which allows you to search for words using the * and ? wildcards in case you don't know the exact spelling of a word or you are playing crosswords.

New in version 2 are the sound modules. These are optionnal modules that you can buy separately from the dictionaries and that add a speech fonctionnality to the dictionaries. So say that you have installed the English -> French dictionary and the English sound module, you can now see a small speaker icon in front of any english word in the dictionnary that is also in the sound module. Click on it and you can hear the word spoken. I've tried it and it works really fine, the voice is slow and clear, very usefull for those time when you have no clue on how to pronounce a particular word.

All in all, i would say that it's a real must have for travellers and students, it can easily replace a mini dictionary, it's much faster to use and it can even speak. Prices (before discount) for the dictionaries range from US$15 and US$30. Prices for the sound modules range from US$5 and US$15. With the 70% off, you can get a dictionnary for as little as US$5, a real bargain for what it is.
