Gps Receiver advice please

7 replies · 4,533 views · Started 09 October 2005

I'm a complete newbie to all this, so forgive my ignorance.

My mate has tom tom on his pda and told me that I could get likewise for my phone. So of I went and have managed to source a new rs-mmc card and tom tom mobile 5, but am stuck on what gps receiver to buy.

I've been to ebay but am worried about compatability, which leads me to my main questions.

Will any BT receiver work?
If not what should I look for?

I've seen lots of BT receivers on ebay etc... but only a handful claim compatibility with my phone.

E.G.

THIS

Doesn't state its compatible with the 6260, but others looking exactly the same say they are.... very confused here....

I have been ensuring that it is compatible with the software. I need one that is compatible with my phone
Any ideas?

I don't know who has ensured and what to you, but in all likelihood every single Bluetooth GPS unit on the market is compatible with your phone, but not all Bluetooth GPS units might be compatible with TomTom (if they have written the application so that only certain devices are supported).

So, get one that TomTom says they have tested and which they support: http://www.tomtom.com/support/

Sorry I misunderstood you there.

I went to tom tom support site and there doesn't appear to be a list of compatible receivers.
Only a list of compatible phones, and yes mine is listed.

Currently I have

Nokia 6260
TT mobile 5
512MB Kingston RS-MMC

So I still need advice on which gps receiver to get.

Ive been looking on ebay at

Qstarz
No name stuff with BT-77
Globalsat BT338 with the latest firmware

All help and advice appreciated

If i understood well you have the TomTom software but you don't have the GPS. I have just bought the Zaapa GPS Bluetooth Portatil and it work perfectly in my 6260 with the maps of Portugal and Spain. It is probably the cheapest and smaller gps of the market, and I was very suspicios about it because the diference of price it's significant - I bought it for 83 euros. The only thingh it is not perfect about it it's the time of connection that same times needs 3 or 4 minutes, but for that price I think it's ok :😊

hi, any bt77 will work on 6260 with tt5 mobile, but you need the any gps patch, i have tt5 for all symbian 60 phones fully updated with all patches, selling on ebay for 3 a cd, just copy and paste to memory card and away you go, so yes that earlier response stateing any gps device (bluetooth) will work with 6260, but you must have update patch allowing all gps recievers-installed first, you select reciever whilst installing tt5 on phone, right after chooseing voice, hope you got it sorted before this reply though, good luck Gary
