Hi, just got N70 and it's my first symbian phone, not quite used to it yet and got a few questions-
On Orange UK, Firmware 2.0537.17. 18-09-05 RM-84
1) What is Packet Data, is it a 3G thing?
2) The screen keeps changing in brightness, I read that there is a sensor that adjusts according to light levels, how do u turn this off?
3) anyone know about Lifeblog- it doesnt seem to be on my phone, how can i install it?(i installed on PC and it told me the phone software was incorrect)
4) how do u get more than one application to run and how do select between them (i think there should be a task manager)
5) how do i make the Symatec security programme update?
anyother tip and tricks or shortcuts, there seems to be menu after menu on these phones! Love it though......
Thanks
1) Packet Data refers to Data fro email / internet connections etc.
2) I believe you can adjust brightness settings under Tools -> Settings
3) Yes you can get a copy from http://www.nokia.com/lifeblog/. It may also be on your CD that came with your phone
4) Multitasking happens automatically. Hold down the application key for a second or so and a lost of currently running applications will pop up. You can also use the applications keys to switch away from a running application to the menu / idle screen (it will still be running in the background)
5) If there isn't an option on the application menu - I'm not sure. I haven't used the Symantec program.
There are a lot of shortcuts / tips you will discover in times. In the application view (the grid view) you can press 1 to 9 to access an application more quickly. The idle screen can be customised in settings. Holding down the power key allows you to bring up a menu to switch profiles. Holding down the power key will turn the backlight on when the keypad is locked (handy in dark situations). Holding down the abc (pencil) key in certain text dialogs will allow you to bring up otpions to copy / paste text.
Hope this gets you started.
Just to add to Rafe's detailed answers.
My N70 didn't have Lifeblog on it either but I have seen it for download at Nokia's N70 support site.
As for the the Symantec Mobile Security... Go to the Security application in the Office folder and under Options you can choose LiveUpdate. Assuming your phone has access to the data network you'll then update your virus definitions. Mine is currently on 03/10/2005

Nokia are continually developing their phone's firmware to fix bugs etc. and some firmware versions can be specific to particular phone networks e.g. Orange.

Do you happen to know therefore if we're able to flash our phones with a more recent versions of our respective firmware?
Is there any documentation of the bugs/issues that newer versions fix?

Yes, you can update your phone's firmware, I did this with my old 7110. You need to take your phone to a Nokia Service Centre and they can flash the new software to the device. I never bothered with my 7650 and left that on 3.16 firmware.
Forums such as All About Symbian and other Smart phone forums are the best place to see what is fixed with each update to firmware.

thanks for the replys
The symatec program decided to update its self over night (after connection), problem sorted there!
About the Packet data, I under stand WAP is a kinda dial up way of comnnecting and GPRS is some kinda seperate frequency. I presume packet data is just GPRS but faster?
And, how do you set your own screen saver. I only get an option for Orange in the themes menu.
cheers
Packet Data is the type of transfer (i.e. data is sent in packets [small portions] grouped toegther). GPRS and WCDMA (3g) are both examples of packet data.
WAP is a series of protocols desinged to enable access to information from WAP sites on a mobile phone. See the WapForum (now the OMA) for more. http://www.wapforum.org/
WAP sites can be accessed over packet data or dial up (aka CSD - circuit switched data).
As for the screensaver - I think on the Orange phones you can't change it. It would be a setting under Display (IIRC).
