N70 - quickest way to write a sms?

21 replies · 6,138 views · Started 13 November 2005

frustratingly it takes so many buttons to write a message to someone i write to frequently (i.e. i see no easy way to write quickly to the same person(s)).

for now i have to
1) at home screen scroll down to messages then choose "write text message" (4 clicks)

2) at the "to" option i have to press the green button, and manually search for the contact i want to write to (many many clicks, particularly searching for the contact).

other phones i've had before -- after you've typed the message - you have a ready shortlist of your last few people that you've sent a text to.

ANY IDEAS/HELP anyone please? (i know you can go to the contact first then choose "write sms"😉 but that takes forever too).

thanks!

I have deactivated the active desktop and have the left curser set to write a new message.

If you want to add the contact last then when the new message has opened scroll down once and write the desired message. When finished hit the middle button and it will ask to 'Add recipient'. This will bring up your contacts list.

This is how most Nokia's work so not sure what phone you used to.

thank you jimbob. sorry to not be more specific, but my question is not how to write a text but rather how to write to your most frequent recipient quicker. i.e. isn't there a way to select your most recent contact that you wrote to last - or the contact you write to the most (INSTEAD of having to manually search for the contact after pressing "add recipient"😉?.

i have used sony ericssons before- and after writing a message, instead of having to go through your entire contacts list to find the recipient - there is a list of the three last (or most common) people you have text'd. (it saves a lot of time). thanks!

My apoligies, I thought you where also asking how to bring the 'create a message' up quicker without having to scroll through the menu's.

Thats sounds like an ideal function but unfortunatly not one that Nokia offer.

oh, okay thanks jimbob. that's a bit disappointing that they don't have this option. as i'm sure with most people, they usually sms the same people everday and it's rather tedious to always have to find them through your contact list.

i guess i could rename my contacts as "1joanna" "2bob" - so they appear FIRST on the contacts list and that would save having to search for "joanna" or "bob" through the contacts list when choosing them as recipients. oh well...

unless anyone else have any suggestions?

i guess in a nutshell i'm asking for a "speed text list" instead of a "speed dial list"!

After writing a message and pressing that middle button, I always put the first two letters of my contact in the search box. I can't really remember it taking ME ages. The contacts i want always come straight up and theres no need to be endlessly scrolling down.

yes, i do the same thing, it is quite easy, no? those couple of seconds of searching for the contact won't kill you mate😉

I know where you're coming from.... my last phone was Sony Ericsson, and yes, the nice feature of the last few people you text was there, and yes i miss it too.... but please, it doesn't really take that long does it!!

i think i can manage it in roughly six button presses (plus whatever you write in the text)

the hot tip here is to create one of your soft keys to go directly to your in-box or 'send sms' which takes you directly into the screen

i leave at least one message from the people i text regularly in my inbox... that way you can just go to their message and hit the centre key to reply - saves having to faff about in the contacts listing.

i do know what you mean about the messaging being a PITA on this model... even my basic nokia 6030 is a helluva lot easier... but then again it doesn't have G3, e-mail, web browsing and other goodies.. its just a compromise we'll have to make i guess.

haha, yes being slightly lazy by wanting to cut down the number of button presses. but hey i'm a busy guy that likes to sms quickly (particulary in boring board meetings throughout the day).

anyways, what i've done is
-made a short cut on the home screen to go directly to write a sms
-after writing the sms
-choose a recipient, but the first 4 entries in contacts literally have numbers added to their first names (i.e. 1joanna, 2alex, etc.)...

so at least my 4 most frequent people i text are there to make it quick (and basically avoid having to scroll through the contacts list).

Anyone of you sms'ers that know how to quickly write "smileys" with n70. I'm used to 6230i and that phone had a quickly shortcut through "symbol-options".

Would appreciate good tips so perhaps I

that's an easy one i'm pleased to say...

when you are entering text just press '1' three times and you'll get a smiley 😊

you can then change it to all sorts using the '*' key

i don't know if you can 'teach' t9 to recognise a cetain number of dots for a particular smiley like you can with the word 'dual' for example!?

unfortunately for those of us like me who like to put alot of '...' between sentences to split things up a bit then that is one of the last options available... ho hum!

Thats what I thought to - the way you bescribe thats how I did it on my 6230i. But it doesnt work on the n70 at all. At least not with my norwegian t9 anyway:frown:

Any other norwegian, or n70 owner who experienced the "big" smiley problem:redface:

ok shorter way😊
of course additional softwarte is required😞.... BUT program SysMan has grat feature of shortcuts to what yuu ask for, e.g. under '*' button u assign writing an sms to your favourite person, under '9' button you assign another person, etc. etc. you can assing automated call (but thats normal phone feature)
Now all you have to do is just hold for 2 sec * (or other assigned button) and the only thing is to write a message and press 'Send' recipient field is filled automatically😊
Enjoy

You will love me for this:

Create a new contact group called "QuickSMS" for example. Add your contact(s) to the new contact group. When you write a new message, you can easily access your contact through the new contact group.

Give me a shout if you get stuck!

😃

But by selcting the group when writing a sms won't it send to everyone in that group and not the individual that you want?

Oh yeah - so it does! (I can feel the love ebbing away!)

It doesn't if you go through contacts>groups>individual>create message though.

Don't know if this is any help.

Soz.

hi,

this is what i found out about N70.. and like you, i like to minimise the steps to write sms. so, this is what do.

1) assign my left soft key to 'New SMS'
- so, pressing it will open up 'writing sms' screen immediately (1st press from standby screen)

2) type in the 1st two letters of the contact i want to send to and the first letter of his last name (if you list it this way in your contact), e.g. Jo H - John Howard

3) scroll down to write my text

4) Press the 'green' button (2nd press)
- alternatively (1 step more), you can use 'Check for Contact' under 'option'

5) There will be a small window popping up below, listing all the contact with 'Jo H' e.g. John Howard, Joseph Halmes, etc.

6) Select the one and press ok and it will automatically send out your sms. (3rd press)

Note: if there is only one 'Jo H' in your contact list, it will automatically detect that and send out the message without asking you to select the contact. So, you can consider having unique name for your favorite pal whom you sms all the time.

So, you only need 3 presses from 'Stand by' screen.. or better still, 2 presses if the contact is unique. Hope this helps.

Very Nice. I was doing this sans the quick lookup, but I assigned the right soft key to "New SMS" because there is a slight delay to the left soft key due to the keylocking process.

thanks for all the responses. and to nive - the sysman program may be just what i'm looking for. thanks. don't suppose you have a link to where i can get that program? cheers!
