Symbian OS shipments rise 131% to 8.54m in Q3 2005

HELSINKI (AFX) - Symbian Ltd said worldwide shipments of phones using its operating system rose sharply year on year in the third quarter, adding the average royalty per unit was also higher.

The software licensing consortium led by Nokia Corp said it shipped 8.54 mln Symbian OS-based phones to network operators and retailers compared with 3.70 mln a year ago.

The company said the total number of shipments in the January-September period surged to over 23 mln units from 8.69 mln a year earlier.

Nokia is Symbian's dominant shareholder and other shareholders include Panasonic, Samsung Corp and the Sony Ericsson joint venture.. ...
