In what way did they not work? Did they install? Was there an error message?

can this thing work as a gps??

Yes, but only with applications installed on it. You can't use it as a GPS for another device, such as a computer. There are several GPS applications available, such as Find the Place (free), Wayfinder (commercial) and nhGPS (commercial with free trial).

can the a920/925 connect to a network or wireless network to browse the web?

If you mean WiFi, or WLAN, then no. But it does have Bluetooth support, so it can use that to surf the web. The speed is lower than 802.11b of course, and also the range is worse. But then again, it's a 3G phone, so it's made for use on the internet as long as you have an UMTS carrier where you're planning to use the phone.
