I've just read this article on Swedish mag Computer Sweden about Nokia releasing the 9300i

Details say
WLAN 802.11g
Specially adapted for email, for example Blackberry Connect, IBM Websphere, Oracle Collaboration Suite, Smartner and Visto.

Weighing at 167g compared to 9500's 230g....

... anyone have any more info?

grrr... this is probably the phone I would have wanted as I don't really care that much about the camera... :frown:

Thanks I was looking for that...

... looks gorgeous... bah... maybe I'll bash myself over the head with my 230g brick... 😞

Yes the new 9300 looks great and WIFI was the one thing that the old one really missed.

But having tried both 9500 and 9300 in daily use, I have to say that if you ARE going to carry a plus sized phone around with you (and even the 9300 is still fairly bulky compared to more "normal" phones) you might as well go for 9500. Although technically similar, the bigger size of the 9500-keyboard and the better designed 5-way scroller makes quite a difference as far as text entry goes.

The way I see it, the real competition for the 9300 is the thumb-boarded E61 that imho is superior as far as E-mail, short texts and calendar goes. Besides the E61 supports WCDMA thus giving it the upper hand in connectivity - over the 9300 and the 9500 both.

This leaves us with the following line-up:

E61 - Calendar, E-mail and light texting.

9500 - Calendar, E-mail and extensive texting or other kind of office work on the go.

Så where does the 9300 fit in? I fail to see it replacing the 9500 for heavy texting on the go... well, unless you have really small fingers...

I see the point of the 9300i, and do like that fact that is smaller. Rather than the E61, I see the E70 as the other competitor to be my next phone. The 990i is also in the running

I am really happy with the 9500, but I need something much smaller. I guess sometime in the new year when they are out and I can compare prices and features I will decided

I may not exactly be the 9 series' target group, as I use my 9500 as a regular social phone because I can't text without a keyboard, but surely the camera is a big advantage to the 9500?

Chris: The E70 could be an alternative also with the full keyboard, except that I'm not sure about the display size. In order to truly compete with the 9300 it has to provide some serious screen real estate. Until I actually see one, I will remain a bit sceptic in this regard. I doesnt look very large on the pictures.

Omroth: Personally I consider the camera one of the "least" attractive features of the 9500. Not that I mind having it, but the resolution is so low that its mainly usefull for taking photos to the contacts.

But its true that the 9500 is a "social phone", because it is still relatively unusual. So you frequently become the center of public attention when you break it out. In fact, I could swear that I've had an easier time getting dates since i got my 9500.... 😃

Couldn't agree with you more, Jowls! The E70 has a tiny screen. It is the usual S60 size. Although the resolution is higher, the physical size is still the same - tiny!

And I still think phone cameras are just as gimmicky as they were when I had an Ericsson T68 with a clip-on camera.

However, the E61 might be something for me because the physical screen size is larger and it will let me use every function one-handedly (unlike the Communicators).

 LMAO,
Could be, 😃

It's never worked for me, :frown: Still date less :bawling:

yeah, right. they're all gold diggers. I also used(up until it broke) my 9290 socally. I just love the james bond(esk) it has. i don't really care about the buisness features. perfect for me would be that same form factor with WiFi, a half decent web browser, good games, some sort of media player that supports wmv, wma among the other basic formats, a headphone jack, and a start page like the 9290, like a decktop, where I can put shortcuts and stuff that I choose. could be marketed very well as a phone for young people. after all, they have enough dough for ipods and that stuff.

Heh, funnily enough I've also experienced a lot of girl-attention to all the communicators I've had over the years: 9100, 9110, 9200, 9210i, 9500. I've always liked how unusual they are, and it seems that people in general would rather have those phones which are just huge screens, which just look horrible to me.

Raven, I disagree about the camera being gimickey. Sure, it's too low quality to take even holiday snaps really, but picture messaging your friends with weird stuff you see every day is a crucial feature for me 😊

And Rossinator: haven't you just described the 9500? Wifi, good web browser (check out Opera Mini: awesome and free), start page with customisable links. I really do love the 9500, my only problem with it is how laggy the outside bit is for loading text messages. Guess it doesn't have a headphone jack, is it possible to get a converter?

Would the 9300i be available, I would have purchased it instead of 9500 (I almost never use the built-in camera). I am even consiering to change for 9300i when released.

Now the problem is that I have a lot of registered software packages (probably for 300) which are authorized for my 9500's IMEI only. Not sure it's easy to have the licences (from various publishers) tranferred to a new IMEI, even less to copy one phone's IMEI to an other.

This leaves us with the following line-up:

E61 - Calendar, E-mail and light texting.

9500 - Calendar, E-mail and extensive texting or other kind of office work on the go.

The 9500 is being de-ranged and is no longer a current device. The 9300i is the replacment to the 9500.

Tomahawk wrote:Isn't the 9500 for boys and the 9300 for girls?

It seems that might be a correct assumption as my I have the 9500 and my wife the 9300 (that was her choice).

Oddly she misses the camera (her previous phone was a 6600) but thinks the 9500 camera isn't as good as the 6600 (technically it's about the same).

The favourite application for her is Agile Messenger (Agile) in this case - now the built in IM for the 9300i does make sense.

This leaves the gateway open for a 9500i.
As they as now fit a 9500 inside a 9300, they should now have the space to fit the missing features:
3G (or HSDPA - I think they might wait for this).
Deal Cameras - for video calling.
VOIP via WLAN as planned for E61.
102.11g/WPA2 upgrade.
Remote wiping - some companies might want more security features.

My only concern is that I am worried that the original 9300/9500 won't get further useful firmware upgrades (like the 9210 vs 9210i).

I am also worried that there could be future Nokia E series models that could spell the end of the Series 80 product line - I would regard that as a backward step and I hope Nokia don't do that.

Not a massive surprise to find out the 9500 has been discontinued: Vodafone for one got into a tiff with Nokia over some 9500 stability issues. None of those suggested 9500i updates really floats my boat, I guess 3G is useful...

I'd pay top dollar if they changed the rocker on the front though. Jeez is it hard to just push it down.

The 9500 might not be so current (Just over a year old) but I don't think the 9300i is a replacement for the 9500,

I hate the front button, One of the 9500's bad points,

I really hope a 9500i is in development, Some of my requested features:
3G Support,
External 2mp camera,
Internal VGA camera,
802.11g 54mb WiFi,
128mb internal memory,
Faster processor (Current processor is a little slow playing videos),
T9 on the outside,

Carl,
