hi gang
i'm getting a bit miffed with looking at the same old screen on my phone for the past few weeks... but more truthfully i am more frustrated at having to work the phone the way some halfwit donkey thinks i should be using it. i'm used to having a phone where i can change the function, look and feel of the phone ie. spv's..
the orange front end - to be honest... sucks*
not quite worked out if i had the phone 'flashed' (i think thats what i'd need nokia to do to it? why the hell do nokia have to do it?!) what i'd end up looking at each time i dragged it out of standby? would this be my best option? what are you other punters who are not coloured orange looking at?
does anyone know of any software that has been written to customise the front end of the N70 so that the user can create personalised home screens that they can adapt to suit their needs perfectly? if the answer to this is no - would anyone like to have a crack at doing this?
* this is just my personal opinion and people are likely to disagree... i mean no offence with this statement.. (it sucks the sweat of a dead man's)... but if you want to differ then please be my guest.
I'm running the N70 on Orange and whilst I agree that you can't remove the start bar from the standby screen you, can run different themes and wallpapers. Here's a couple of screenshots of my current theme.

If you do a Google search (or even a forum search) for "Orange HomeScreen", you'll see that this has a fair number of people up in arms and not just with the N70 but with most of Nokia's latest S60 phones. Doesn't really bother me that much but it would be nice to have the choice of switching it off.
If it really bothers you you'll have to get your phone re-flashed with generic N70 firmware. From what I have read a lot of Nokia Service Centres may refuse to do this anyway as they risk frying the phone. Yet other NSC's seem to perform the the task with no problem or worry.

That's a lovely theme... where did you get it?
What is it called?
I take it it is some kind of windows based theme?

Hi,
I think it came from http://gallery.mobile9.com/ or possibly http://www.symbianthemes.com/ and it's called something like 'XP SP2 FullVersion'.
I just love all the icons they have been drawn/ported so beautifully.

Thank you!
My phone is much more colourful now!
I do like the original nokia themes, but they loo a bit stupid when you you have acolourful wallpaper on the homescreen.

thanks Steve.. i'll pass on the wallpapers etc.. i'm interested in changing the operation of the phone to suit me.. not Orange.
Spoke to Nokia today and they recommended Car Phone Warehouse or Town & Country NSC's to get the phone flashed and that they could get it done under warranty...
there was another thread in one of the Nokia support forums where a chap was having problems with his firmware version... got it flashed and it solved his problems and got rid of the orange home screen... and i think unlocked it but i can't remember if that's correct.
what i was trying to establish is.. WHEN i get my phone flashed... what screen will i be presented with when my phone comes out of stanby? can anyone post an example like steve has with his orange home screen?
here's hoping!

You'll get the default Nokia themes, as to which one will be selected I can't say. But the screen will have the normal Series 60 look about it. i.e. Signal strength bar top left, Clock to the right, Network logo at the top and battery strength bar top right. Take a look at the following thread...
http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/forum//forum/thread/42765/
Bear in mind that Proandi is running Active Standby hence the icons running near the top of the info bar but at least with Nokia you can switch this off for a cleaner look.

thanks - thats what i was after!
makes you wonder why Orange had to screw around with a perfectly good design and layout?!
Thta's what we've all been asking, and we've been asking orange directly....
and when you asked Orange their response was.......???
Basically Orange dont think that ruining wallpapers, slowing the phone down, squandering the phones memory, removing the functionality of the joystick, ruining the initial interface of the phone are any cause for concern. Apparently we are all rejoicing in the "one homescreen across all models" ethos.. as we dont know how to use a phone unless Orange tell us how to.
that figures... :hmpf:
has anyone in this forum actually had their orange N70 flashed or am i the guinea pig?
phooey wrote:that figures... :hmpf:has anyone in this forum actually had their orange N70 flashed or am i the guinea pig?
I've read quite a few posts on various forums where owners have had their N70 flashed with generic firmware to remove the Orange HomeScreen.
S.
Here's what a factory un-locked un-branded n70 looks like, standard theme.

thank you EinZtein! 😊
why oh why oh why do Orange think they have the right to ruin what looks to be a perfectly designed front end?
after all who are the professional phone builders here - nokia or orange?
here in birmingham i got my 6630 flashed with generic software by a nsc & didnt have to pay. cpw nsc will probs refuse to do it but if you try shops that only have a few stores then you should get it flashed generic no probs

"We think it's fine, so eff off"...well, not quite so directly...they actually said....
Thank you for your email dated 16 November 2005, which was addressed to Mr
Sanjiv Ahuja, Chief Executive Officer, Orange. I have been asked by Sanjiv
to respond on his behalf and keep him informed of all actions taken.
I regret to learn that you are dissatisfied because of 'Orange
HomeScreen'. However, we install our own software to ensure that all
phones are compatible with the Services offered by Orange, such as Line 2,
and have no current plans to remove it.
We do not consider that our software hinders the use of our phones and as
such would not offer to remove it. If a customer wishes to do this at
their own cost then they can do so but this may affect their warranty if
it is found that the removal has damaged the phone.
We do offer customers the option of purchasing phones without our software
as they can purchase 'generic' phones from independent dealers, however,
the majority of 'generic' phones are not covered by Care and customers
would need to purchase Insurance from an independent company - they would
still be covered by the Manufacturer for their warranty.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for taking the time to
share your views with us. I assure you that they have been included in my
report, which the Board of Directors have access to and can view at any
stage. This information has also been fed back to our Business Improvement
Team who will in turn forward your comments to the relevant Process
Management Groups for their monthly review.
Whilst I appreciate that this may not be the response that you
anticipated, I trust that it addresses all of your concerns.
Yours sincerely
Twat
Executive Assistant
Which is the same email that has been sent to EVERYONE who emailed the exec office.
now THAT response sucks the sweat of a dead mans...
(i don't know what it means sir, but it sounds pretty negative to me!)
i'd have blown a * gasket if that had been * sent to me... you're a * CUSTOMER for * sake!!!
my feeling is that Orange have invalidated a bloody good phone and getting it flashed WON'T invalidate the warranty but actually validate it by making the phone more solid and functional.
* *'s!
*=insert expletive of choice if desired
I had my Orange 6630 flash by a NSC and they screwed it up. It failed to work with any of their data services afterwards. Then orange refused to replace it for 6 weeks on the grounds it was a s/w upgrade that had knackered it and that wasn't covered by the Orange insurance. I complained alot and because I'm a heavy internet user they swapped it.
To add insult to injury the 6630 they replaced it with was running the stupid redesigned front end (V4.03.40) which prevented any of the previous key shortcut programming that the Version 2.x allowed as well as rendering many of the funky themes irrelevant by removing the theme image that appeared at the top level of the UI with some naff sand dunes.
😊 The only other provider I have experienced is Vodafone. I have a K700i for work and its functionally a pretty similar phone. Vodafone have put an extra 'Theme' option under the wallpaper menu and the cursor button can still be customised. I used to love my 6630 before Orange spoilt it!
😡 I wanted to go for the N70 with Orange but now doubt I will.
I just flash my N70 and got firmware:
V 3.0546.2.3
18-11-05
RM-84
and let me tell you, there is not problem to get the phone fried or something like that... please... I do not understand why service providers have to touch the phone configuration... I think they have not right to do it... thanks god here I do not have that problem with my service provider....
:icon4: Hi ! Can anybody give me the link of this theme pls :frown: ;

You should still be able to get the theme from those sites, look for "XP SP2 full version" However I created the wall paper for that theme myself, it's just a cut and paste job from Window's own bliss.jpg.

The moral of this tale... Orange, stop fucking around with Nokias phone software/firmware, non of the other do it, so STOP! it's not big and/or clever!
You lost me (from DAY ONE an Orange customer for like 6/7 years or something) to T-Mobile... ohhh okay, it had summit to do with it's great FLEXT plans to 😊

To be fair, Orange have listened to all the whining... as of V5.0616.2.0.3 the Orangised N70 now has the option to switch off the Orange HomeScreen. The N80 on Orange never had the HomeScreen installed in the first place.
