Hi all,
I have been experiencing various problems as described by other forum users - noise on radio, TomTom5 crashing, Bluetooth devices dropping connections, etc., for the 2 weeks I have owned a Nokia N70.
Nokia Technical Support were of little use. Their response was to ask for loads of details about the N70 software version, Network, and about all Bluetooth devices I own. Following on from this they simply told me to take the handset to a Nokia Service Centre (a 50 mile drive!) for it to be assessed for a possible repair - 😮 *IF* the fault was covered by the warranty... 😮
TomTom have been disappointing also, as they sent an auto response containing a link to the compatibiliy web page. I then asked them specifically if they were working on an N70 compatible version of TT5, but theyn didn't reply.
However, today some REALLY usefull information was given to me by my handset supplier, E2SAVE/Carphone Warehouse UK...
"ALL O2 Nokia N70's have a serious software fault and O2 will not release any stock to customers until the problem has been resolved (by Nokia?) and the new software version has been acceptance tested".
There is no E.T.A. for the completion of testing and therefore it could be at least 3 weeks (according to E2SAVE) before O2 have any N70 stock available to UK customers. Frustrated and disappointed, I obtained a Returns Authorisation and cancelled my O2 contract.
Perhaps in 6 months when the N70 actually works, I will try again!
Poor poor show, Nokia!!! Stop rushing out new models before they are ready!

Hmm, interesting.
I wonder if this development will hit the other Network providers. I was under the impression that O2 fiddled the least with the firmware under the bonnet of the N70.

My factory un-branded factory un-locked n70 operates flawlessly with no such problems.
It's your operators branding that screwed the phone up, not Nokia. You should just buy a factory un-locked n70 and you wouldn't have those problems.

To be fair, I haven't suffered these problems with my Orangised (bastardised???) N70. People maybe screaming blue murder about the HomeScreen but I haven't had issue with Bluetooth/FM Radio or my TomTomGO 700.
I've got 5 paired Bluetooth devices (2x laptop PC's, 1x headset, 1x TomTomGo 700 & 1x Nokia 7650) and they all work without issue. I've used the FM radio and again haven't suffered the problems that others have seen re phone interference.
At the time I bought my N70 (just over a month ago) the ugrade via Orange cost me approx 200 notes whereas to get an unbranded model at the time would have set me back approx 599.99. Looking around today a month or so later the N70 seems to have dropped to around 320 sim free.
Ideally we'd all buy unbranded if we could, sometimes it's not a viable option.

I just rang orange on this and they said the were unaware with any problems to the phone , but it wont work woth my bluetooth radio or my tom tom 300 just drops out after a few mins :icon13: :frown:
mines on 3 network, problems with bluetooth not uploading/downloading files but that all sorted by a call to the 3 network call center.Maybe its just the network you are on...
I have been waiting to upgrade to the N70 with O2 for months, and every time I called had been getting new promised dates.
This is really irritating me 😡
My N70 on Orange has problems with the Bluetooth,
Sometimes with incomming bluetooth connections, I don't get any request notification,
This I think is due to the Orange Homescreen Rubish, 😞

I'm not too sure on this. You posted this on the 1-12-05 and o2 retail stores didn't started selling them on the 2-12-05.. If this was real o2 wouldnt have released it in their own shops..

Hi,
As others have already said to you in this forum (but in a different thread) very few people can afford the 400 up front to buy a Sim-Free N70...
however, I have a question to you... who programs the Network customisations? Nokia or the various Network Operators themselves?
Personally, I don't believe for one moment that Nokia would allow the networks to re-program their handset firmware on their own, but instead charge the networks to customise or 'bespoke' the firmware for them.
I work in the software industry and that's how 99.99% of software vendors work - they make loads of extra money from customers who can afford to bespoke the applications.
So, in simple terms, it *IS* Nokia who screws up the network speficic firmware, by imposing tight deadlines on their development teams to meet the demands of Network providers, thus compromising on testing before release.
This isn't a have a go at Nokia rant either, it's industry wide (mal) practice!

Whilst it's true that they (O2) have the non-working demo handsets in the O2 shops and O2 online is now advertising them for sale, I checked on Saturday and both O2 Online and my local O2 shops had no stock available.
However, my original supplier (E2SAVE) probably doesn't get stock from O2 as quickly as O2's own retail outlets so it makes sense O2 will get the ones with upgraded firmware several days before the 3rd party re-sellers.
Anyway, thanks for the info, I might try an N70 from O2 themselves once they have stock online or in my area (South Scotland).
Cheers,
Dez

That may be the case in scotland. But i know for a fact that the store in northampton had some in stock on friday, because i was looking at one. My sister is a manager for an o2 retail store and she said all the stores in her area received delivery of them on friday.
My point is, why would they have allowed these to be on sale on friday (i bought one) if they had discovered the bug before this.
i ordered the N70 from o2 online yesterday, it's due for delivery tomorrow, it had better come, i've been waiting three months for it to be released!😉

Hi,
Don't worry stocks of O2 N70's are now shipping OK.
I got my replacement N70 today, with the latest O2 firmware.
v3.0546.2.3 18.11.05 RM-84
I will post here early next week with any other comments on the reliability of the latest firmware on O2.
Cheers,
Dez
Thats the same firmware i've got.. This phone is slow as hell.. But other than that no serious bugs..
The Radio is so noisy it's not even usable... So I have to wait for the new firmware and get it installed or is this a hardware issue?
