HELP! N70 keeps on resetting

2 replies · 1,664 views · Started 25 December 2005

Help me!

My N70 keeps on resetting, at random times, both whilst I am using it and sometimes while I am not! It is as new, I haven't installed any third party software.

Its happened once or twice whilst I have been handling it, once when I did a Sync with my PC another when I simply went to the gallery. Then its done it 6 times when I havent even been touching the phone, it'll light up so I grab it thinking I have a message but when I look at the screen it's on the white Nokia logo screen then boots back into Symbian, with all apps shutdown.

There has been nothing consistent about the times it has done it, sometimes charger attached, sometimes not, sometimes USB attached, sometimes not. The only things I can think it might be are either a faulty memory causing exceptions, but I dont get why this would happen when I am not using the phone, or because I live on the boundaries of loads of mobile cells, the phone is constantly switching between 2G and 3G, up to three times a minute when I have been watching it, maybe this could be causing a buffer to overflow?

Any help greatly appriciated, it's still under 3's 14 day gaurentee, do you think it's worth getting a new handset off them, just in case?

Merry Christmas. Best Wishes to all.
Seb.

EDIT: Is it possible to put the N70 into a verbose logging mode? Perhaps might help track down the problem.

I would request a replacement N70, and see how that works out.

If you get the same problem it could be a fault with the custom firmware that orange install 😎

Hi Seb,

I bought my N70 in mid Nov - big mistake! It seems they didn't debug it before release as I too have suffered from all the problems you described (and then some)

The constant changing of service type I could live with ... but

The caller ID has a mind of its own - choosing not to recognise certain numbers, thus causing the obvious embarrassment of having to ask whom the person ringing is (not so funny after the 4th time!)

One month into owning the phone it developed a habit of randomly restarting. (Much like you said, there doesn't appear to be a specific trigger)

The phone also seems to decide when it lights up.... ie the screen will light up for no reason, the keypad light dims mid way through typing a txt etc

Apart form the cripplingly slow browsing speed of the gallery/contacts/majority of submenus the other faults are more minor.

I tried numerous hard resets to no avail. So out of desperation I took it to the CPW Nokia SS..... well lets just say CPW are the biggest bunch of (words fail to describe) clueless ******* ever! To make things worse the assistant assured me his Vodaphone N70 worked flawlessly.... upon pressing him about this he admitted he had hardly used it as he owned 4 other phones... say no more!

Luckily a smaller Nokia SS performed a flash of the latest 3 firmware
(Apparently released within the last week as the previous firmware had a habit of corrupting the phone..... now theres a revelation) It is too early to say whether this has solved any of the problems, but I ****** hope it has, as I refuse to pay 20 for generic FW to fix a product that has yet to work properly.

I will be writing to the consumer protection/rights agency in the New Year.

Edit : 6 hours after the phone was re-flashed it has resumed the restarting (especially when writing txt's)

Current Firmware: v2.0539.1.2 19-10-05 RM-84

How do you guys think I stand in terms of forcing 3/nokia/CPW to replace with a new handset or a different phone? To sum it up the product does not function (as intended/advertised) correctly despite attempts to have it fixed via official means.
