TomTom mobile just buying a map...

Hi there,

Since I had TomTom3 for my PDA I really didnt want to shell out for the full mobile package as I have no need for another GPS receiver and so forth.

TomTom Customer "no" Support informed me that it wasnt possible for me to buy just the software since the sales department had yet to make that available... ah well, no go then I thought.

Then a thread on pocketgps was pointed out in which Eldar - a moderator - claimed that it was possible to download and install the 5.2 upgrade, add in a free voice file downloaded from Plus services, and to then buy the GB map and thus receive an activation code.

Anyhow, I thought I would investigate this before I move to Wayfinder or similar.

First up, installed the 5.2 upgrade to a blank RS MMC, and added in a voice file.

The system boots up and it looks good.

This is where I come unstuck though, since when going in to buy the necessary map, TomTom inform you that the maps are only available for purchase if you already own another map... since another map would have to have come with the product, is this their way of enforcing the no software without boxed product status? Since the only way you would pre-own a map would be if you had already bought the full boxed product?

Naturally I have stopped from ordering the map, I am not about to give my name address and CC details over whilst doing something that could be construed as a for of piracy / breach of manufacturer rules , although as I would be paying for the map and thus gaining an activation code I am not sure of the legality.

Any thoughts anyone? and is it really not possible to simply buy a map without owning another?

I will up date you if I get any further. But the 5.2 upgrade with a free voice file (like Jane) definitely installs the app!...

Life could be so much easier if TomTom decided to give some thought to "looking after" existing customers, in fact even doing a sales campaign to owners of other platforms offering them a deal to get them onto mobile too! Maybe I just dont understand the market place they operate in, but in mine it is always existing customers who are the easiest sell...

Well when you buy the map it gives you the option to select you don't have any other maps so i think that in itself would get rid of any legal obligations to have to own a map first. As such i can't see it being counted as piracy.

It's up to you in the end. You can always wait for TomTom to release the software only release but that could be months away, or maybe even never.
