Need to flash my N70 to version 3 to cure the known bluetooth fault but its a vodfone branded n70! Have had the firmware update to version 2.5 but this is as high as vodafone go at present. Have been told that you cant put generic nokia firmware (ie version 3) on this phone. Is this correct or am I getting a load of flannel????
Flashing a Vodafone N70
Hi Andy
I have a vodafone N70, just got it on monday with the old 2.05 firmware, I spoke to someone on vodafone support and he said that there wouldn't be a problem flashing phone with generic software, only thing is you'll have to setup all the vodafone settings yourself, and you'll lose the vodaphone theme and screensaver. But if you wanted them I'm sure they can be backed up with FExplorer before you flashed with generic firmware and installed later.
Also spoke to two local independent nokia service centers and they both say that there wouldn't be any problem flashing vodafone handset with generic firmware either.
Setting up the phone with vodafone settings shouldn't be too hard as there is an operator wizard on the nokia website. I haven't used it yet but I think it just a case of downloading the software I think to your phone and selecting vodafone from the list and thewizard will do the rest.
Haven't got N70 flashed yet but will be very soon, maybe tomorrow.
Hope it helps you
David
Well I got my firmware updated with the latest generic nokia one yesterday and everthing is working great.
I also copied both the vodafone screensaver and theme before updating and installed on the new firmware and they both work, screensaver needed the ini file updated. So I haven't really lost any vodafone specific features, but I think I've gained the IM application as I can't remember it being there before.

1st Post!
What tools do you need to perform the flashing, besides the generic firmware? Where can you get it?Is this something you can do yourself or do you have to take your phone to a Nokia Service Point?
If you can do this yourself, please state which cables and software are used and which are the main steps to follow to execute this procedure.
Just like some of you, I'm also looking to get rid of all the Vodafone branding.
This is my first Nokia and my first Symbian phone...I really don't know how this is supposed to work, I did use to flash and debrand SE phones all the time, maybe this works the same...
Hey Pal
I had mine debranded and flashed last week from www.fonefunshop.co.uk they are based in sheffield but do offer a postal service which is very quick.

you have tot take it to a service point. cpw nsp will make a big deal out of flashing with genric but other centres not well known e.g. mobile communications in birmingham will do it without you asking
Yeah, I am unfortunate that my local "Nokia Club" Service Point doesn't want to perform this firmware upgrade with generic software. They will update but only to latest Vodafone firmware.
NOKIA: "We're sorry, but Vodafone doesn't allow us to perform such operation...plus, it can cause damage to the phone if some compatibility issues would surface" (NOTE: this damage talk is clearly BS)
ME: "You sure? I'll assume the risk of damage to the phone"
NOKIA: "No, I'm sorry we won't do it...really sorry"
ME: :banghead:
I'll have to try and find someone else to to this for me. I should say that it was easy for me to hide all Vodafone stuff on my phone, and I don't think the Vodafone custom firmware cripples the phone that much... I'm fairly happy with it right know as I'm going to change the housing and keyboard and get rid of the Vodafone branding on the phone itself.
try searching on the nokia site for nsc & go to the ones which only have one or two stores in total i.e. not chains like cpw or phones4u
