On a side note I had my orange N70 debranded by fonefunshop and it seem alot faster than before, I can't recommend these guys enough.

Indeed, and the S60 (Series 60) version is "2nd Edition, Feature Pack 3" a.k.a. version 2.8.

whats the difference between a phone having symbian 8.1a for example & a phone having series 609 1st edition feature pack 2.
i mean if symbian is the os whats series 60?

Symbian is the core operating system, and S60 is layered on top providing a lot of the funcionality you see (user interface, applications, much of the lower level stuff that's invisible to a user, but not part of the operating system).

So, they always come in pairs.

S60 0.9/Symbian OS 6.1 (the Nokia 7650)
S60 1.2/Symbian OS 6.1 ("S60 1st Edition", devices like the Nolia 3650, N-Gage, Siemens SX1, Sendo X & others)
S60 2.0/Symbian OS 7.0s ("S60 2nd Edition", devices like the Nokia 6600, Panasonic X700, X800)
S60 2.1/Symbian OS 7.0s ("S60 2nd Edition Feature Pack 1", devices like the Nokia 7610, 6260, Samsung D730, etc.)
S60 2.6/Symbian OS 8.0a ("S60 2nd Edition Feature Pack 2", Nokia 6630, 6680, etc.)
S60 2.8/Symbian OS 8.1a ("S60 2nd Edition Feature Pack 3", N70, N90)
S60 3.0/Symbian OS 9.1 ("S60 3rd Edition", N91, E70, etc.)

Are there big differences in those OS? Or is it like Win 98, 98 SE, ME, 2000, XP. The layout changed a bit, extra's added, other extra's deleted?

What symbian OS is the average best?

Form a user's point of view, no big differences between the operating system versions. More so from software developer's point of view.

With the S60 versions there are more user-visible differences, such as S60 2nd Edition adding the S60 Themes, S60 2nd Ed. FP 2 adding the Active Standby", FP3 adding support for larger display resolutions, 3rd Ed. with a totally new web browser, etc.

What's the "average best" I can't say (depends on the criteria).
